ELC 202C (Module 10) Villarin

The document is an activity sheet for a student named Romel Villarin taking a course on basic electronics. It contains questions about level control systems, pressure control systems, and different types of governors used on ships. Level control systems aim to control the rate of fluid delivery to a tank to maintain a desired level. Pressure control valves are used to regulate system pressures. Common types of governors for ship engines include mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-hydraulic governors.

PART 1. EVALUATE / TEST ASSESSMENT

1. What is the purpose of level control system?

The purpose of the controller in the level control process is to maintain

a level set point at a given value and be able to accept new set point values
dynamically .A control system manages, commands, directs, or regulates the behavior of
other devices or systems using control loops. It can range from a single home heating
controller using a thermostat controlling a domestic boiler to large Industrial control
systems which are used for controlling processes or machines.

2. What are the application pressure control systems?

A system which requires accurate and consistent pressure control, and installations

which have variable and high flow rates and/or variable or high upstream pressure,
including autoclaves, highly rated plant such as large heat exchangers and calorifiers, and
main plant pressure reducing stations.

3. Explain the different type of governor on board ship?

 Mechanical Governors

These governors consist of weighted balls, or flyweights, that experience a centrifugal

force when rotated by the action of the engine crankshaft. This centrifugal force acts as the
controlling force and is used to regulate the fuel supplied to the engine via a throttling
mechanism connected directly to the injection racks.

 Hydraulic governors

In hydraulic governors, the weighted assembly is connected to a control valve, rather

than the fuel control racks directly, as is the case in a mechanical governor. This valve is
responsible for directing hydraulic fluid which controls the fuel racks and hence the power

or speed of an engine. A greater force can be generated and these governors find
application in medium to large size engines.

 Electro-Hydraulic governors

These kinds of governors have an actuator with two sections- a mechanical hydraulic
backup and an electric governor. In case of failure of the electric governor, the unit can be
in manual control, on the mechanical-hydraulic backup governor. The mechanical governor
is set at a speed which is higher than the rated sped; the speed and load of the entire
system are controlled by the electric governor. The system has an electronic control valve
that is connected to the armature in an electromagnetic field.

PART 2. EXTEND

What is the purpose of the following control system on-board ship?

A. Temperature control systems

The role of the temperature controller is to measure the temperature on the

thermocouple, compare it to the set point and to calculate the amount of time
the heater should remain switched on to maintain a constant temperature. If you need
more heat, switch on the heater

B. Level control systems

Level control is a very common process requirement for vessels across a wide range of
industrial and research applications.  In some industrial systems a flow control valve is
configured for level control where the input to the flow control valve is provided by an
analog level sensor. The main aim possessed by these systems is to control the rate with
which the pump delivers fluid to the tank and so it can reach the desired level inside the
tank.

C. Pressure control systems

Pressure-control valves are found in virtually every hydraulic system, and they assist in
a variety of functions, from keeping system pressures safely below a desired upper limit to
maintaining a set pressure in part of a circuit. Types include relief, reducing, sequence,
counterbalance, and unloading.

What are the types of governor for Engines Used on Ships?

The speed of the marine engine is controlled by an instrument known as governor,

which can be of – hydraulic, electro-hydraulic or electronic governor type. The most famous
types of governor used for both main engine and generator engine are the electro-
hydraulic type marine governor. It’s because of this little instrument that the engine speed
can be smoothly controlled from a remote space (bridge or engine control room).

 Mechanical Governors

These governors consist of weighted balls, or flyweights, that experience a centrifugal

force when rotated by the action of the engine crankshaft.

 Hydraulic governors

In hydraulic governors, the weighted assembly is connected to a control valve, rather

than the fuel control racks directly, as is the case in a mechanical governor

 Electro-Hydraulic governors

These kinds of governors have an actuator with two sections- a mechanical hydraulic
backup and an electric governor.
