OGL 345: Organizational Ethics

Module 6: Course Reflection Paper
2021 Spring B Session
April 21, 2021

Coming into Organizational Ethics (OGL345), I was of the view that the course will be

strictly looking at how fair leaders solve issues in workplaces and how they those decisions are

made. I had no idea how broad the subject of ethics was and how it has been studied with

theories developed by different people over the years. The textbook by Mick Fryer (Ethics

Theory and Business Practice), made my understanding of ethics easy. The way the chapters

have been laid out and the rich content contained therein made me relate some theories to real

life scenarios. The book was somewhat advantageous to me having been written by a Briton in

British English, I found the book easy to understand being someone with a British education

background and still unable to transition completely to American English. The integration of

video activities and real life scenarios (Theory in Practice) made it easy to understand the

theories presented in the book, especially for someone like myself who keeps up with world

news and happened to remember all the scenarios (Theory in Practice) presented in the book.

The book format (Perusall) also added to the ease of understanding the book content

because of the discussion functionality incorporated in the software. As much as I like having

hard copies, this version is much easier and better because it gives the reader an opportunity to

see how other students understand the readings. The interactions in the reading with other

students makes the reading clearer as we can explain and simplify what we are reading in real

time. Where I do not understand, I can ask a question either to the instructor or my fellow

students and I will get responses explaining what I did not understand. Also, when I come across
a student’s question, I tend to respond to the best of my ability making sure I have touched the

points raised by the student. The discussions were also an opportunity to meet other students in

the online class setting and share knowledge as the learning is going on.

The other resource that was of great help in addition to the book was the Planet Jockey

Moral Minefield simulation. This resource was educational and helpful in that it presented real

life scenarios. What was happening in these scenarios is exactly what transpires in many

organizations. My best part in this resource is the “learning outcomes”, the clarity made during

these short video episodes is what made me truly understand what the initial scenario was about

and how to approach the issues presented. I felt like I was being trained on the job whenever I

was completing a level in Planet Jockey – Business Ethics. With all the course materials I have

gone through in this class, I have come to understand that Ethics is not only about workplaces.

Ethics covers a wide range of activities and situations we find ourselves in daily. It is asking

people to act appropriately, be responsible and attend to issues we can at any given time. Ethics

is about morality in businesses and communities we spend most of our time and life in, it is

about doing the right thing for humanity to progress and the world remain a better place for

future generations.

In conclusion, I want to state that the theories I have learned in this course will help me

understand situations and be able to interpret them better. Some may be old theories but are still

relevant to today’s life. Through my development, I will continue using these scenarios in

solving issues that I come across both in my personal and professional life. Sharing these thought

processes with my coworkers so I can help them understand how am able to see and solve

difficult situations.
