QUESTION:
1. In your opinion, do you think Rizal did retract his philosophies and ideas about the revolution
and the church? If you were torn between love and freedom, which will you choose? Justify
your answer.
ANSWER:
To answer whether Jose Rizal retracted his philosophies about the revolution and the church, we
must first examine the evidence.
A document which said “I retract with all my heart whatever in my words, writings, publications and
conduct have been contrary to my character as son of Catholic Church.” Was reported by several
historians claiming that it is an evidence that proves Jose Rizal retracted his anti-Catholic ideas.
However, there are doubts of the authenticity. There was also no certificate of Rizal’s Catholic
marriage to Josephine Bracken.
Ricardo Pascual also concluded the retraction document said to have been discovered was not in
Rizal’s handwriting. However, some of the prominent Philippines historians have stated that the
retraction document was authentic and some to have been judged as such by foremost expert on the
writing of Rizal.
There were 11 eyewitnesses reffered to by historians when Rizal wrote his retraction, recited and
signed a catholic prayer book. Others also saw him kiss the crucifix before being executed. These
included a great grandnephew of Rizal, 7 newspapers, 12 historians and writers, head of the Spanish
Supreme Court which was admired and respected by Rizal himself.
It is therefore, in my opinion, that Rizal did retract his philosophies and ideas based on the above and
from what I have read. Although I have come to this opinion, I also have doubt whether his retraction
was genuine and sincere or it was forced before his death by executive.
In summary, whether or not the retraction was genuine, it is my belief that any good deeds or actions
that have given hope, courage and better future should be recognised. If there’s anything positive that
we can learn from individual’s greatness or flaws the we must absorb it and continue to develop a
better understanding of who we are, what we believe in and what we aspire to be in order to better
ourselves to bring a brighter future.
And if I were torn between love and freedom, what will I choose? Well, love and freedom
compliments each other, but if you had to choose one then choose love. With the right kind of love
freedom will follow. Love without freedom will devolves into resentment and freedom without love
results in loneliness and isolation.
The flow of love and freedom allows our hearts to open and experience deep intimacy without trying
to control each other. Relationship or loves require the needs to give ourselves in order to make
adjustments to each other. However, when we experience the benefits that deep connection or
intimacy provides, these offerings to our partner feels more like gifts than sacrifices. One of the
benefits it provides is the experience of being seen and known as we are. Despite of how negative we
feel about ourselves, when we feel that we are accepted and loved, we begin to love ourselves
unconditionally. This gives us a sense of freedom from the need for the approval of others. To have
freedom to be ourselves we must learn and experience true love.
