Assignments No. 678

The document describes two operations research assignment problems involving transportation/assignment and network analysis. The transportation problem involves assigning shipments from three plants to four distribution centers to minimize costs based on distance. The optimal solution assigns specific shipment quantities from each plant to each center. The assignment problem involves assigning five swimmers to four strokes for a medley team to minimize total time. The optimal assignment matches specific swimmers to strokes. The network analysis problem involves finding the maximum flow through two networks from a source to a sink node within the flow capacities of each branch. The solutions illustrate iterating flows along paths until maximum is reached.

ASSIGNMENT NO 6 (Transportation and Assignment Problems)

1) A company has three plants producing a certain product that is to be shipped to four
distribution centers. Plants 1, 2, and 3 produce 12, 17, and 11 shipments per month,
respectively. Each distribution center needs to receive 10 shipments per month. The
distance from each plant to the respective distributing centers is given below in milers:
(25 points)
Distribution Center
1 2 3 4
1 800 1,300 400 700
Plant 2 1,100 1,400 600 1,000
3 600 1,200 800 900

The freight cost for each shipment is $100 plus 50 cents per mile. How much should be
shipped from each plant to each of the distribution centers to minimize the total
shipping costs? Use the three approaches in solving for the optimal solution.

ANSWER:

DISTRIBUTION CENTER

1 2 3 4 SUPPLY
10 2
1 800 1,300 400 700 12, 2 =0
PLANTS 2 1,100 8
1,400
9
600 1,000 17 , 9 =0
3 600 1,200 1
800
10
900 11 , 10 =0
DEMAND 10 =0 10 , 8 =0 10 , 1 =0 10 =0 TOTAL =40
(10 x 800) + (2 x 1,300) + (8 x 1,400) + (9 x 600) + (1 x 800) + (10 x 900) = 37,000

II. LEAST COST CELL METHOD

DISTRIBUTION CENTER
1 2 3 4 SUPPLY
1 800 1,300 10
400
2
700 12, 2 =0

PLANTS 2 1,100 10
1,400 600 7
1,000 17 , 10 =0
3 10
600 1,200 800 1
900 11 , 7 =0
DEMAND 10 =0 10 =0 10 =0 10 , 8 , 7
=0

(10 x 400) + (2 x 700) + (10 x 1,400) + (7 x 1,000) + (10 x 600) + (1 x 900) = 33,300
2) The coach of a certain swim team needs to assign swimmers to a 200-yard medley team
to send to the Junior Olympics. Since most of his best swimmers are very fast in more
than one stroke, it is not clear which swimmer should be assigned to each of the four
strokes. The five fastest swimmers and the “best times” (in seconds) they have achieved
in each of the strokes (for 50 yards) are: (25 points)

Swimmer
Stroke Carl Chris David Tony Ken
Backstroke 37.7 32.9 33.8 37.0 35.4
Breaststroke 43.4 33.1 42.2 34.7 41.8
Butterfly 33.3 28.5 38.9 30.4 33.6
Freestyle 29.2 26.4 29.6 28.5 31.1

The coach wishes to determine how to assign four swimmers to the four different
strokes to minimize the sum of the corresponding “best times”. Formulate this problem as an
assignment problem and solve for the optimal solution.
