Homeroom Guidance Module from DepEd

Activity:

Welcome to the new academic year! We are thrilled to be partnering with you as you
participate in an exciting educational journey of discovery. This week you will discover your
areas of strength, and identify your weaknesses in studies. You will learn about your preferred
leaning style, tips to organize your studies, and ways to help you remember what you study.
You’ll find that once you develop effective study habits, the job of studying and learning will
become easier. Instead of working harder, you’ll be working smarter.

Your Learning Preference

The first step in developing effective study habits is knowing how you learn best.
Everyone approaches learning tasks differently. Everyone has a unique and personal learning
style through which learning comes easily.

Depending on how you learned a certain thing, you will have an idea on what learning
channel (by sight, by hearing, by doing, by reading, or by asking questions) you will use. Ask
yourself the following: Am I more inclined to remember something better when I see it, when I
hear it, or when I experience it or do something active with it?

In fact, we use all our senses in learning about the world around us, but each of us has a
tendency to lean more heavily on one of the many learning channels – visual, auditory, verbal,
physical, logical, interpersonal or intrapersonal. This phenomenon is known as your learning
style. Learning styles are overall patterns that provide direction to learning and teaching. This
can also be described as a set of factors, behaviors, attitudes that facilitate learning for an
individual in a given situation. Technically, an individual’s learning style refers to the preferential
way in which the student absorbs, processes, comprehends and retains information.

There are many types of learning styles. You can improve your study habits by developing
any of these:

Visual (spatial) Learner

Visual learners are those who prefer learning by observing things. Using pictures, images,
diagrams, whiteboards and more helps these types of learners understand information better.
These students can easily visualize information, have a good sense of direction and usually likes
to draw and doodle.

Aural (auditory) Learner

Sound and music are a strong suit for these types of learners who typically have a good sense of
rhythm. These learners are usually singers or musicians who are familiar with different
instruments and the sounds they make. Aural learners are good listeners who normally learn
best through verbal presentations like lectures and speeches.

Verbal (linguistic) Learner

These learners prefer using words, both in speech and writing. They can easily express
themselves and usually love to read and write. Verbal learners tend to have a vast vocabulary
and excel in activities that involve speaking, debating, and journalism.

Physical (kinesthetic) Learner

Whether it’s by using their body or hands, these learners are all about the sense of touch.
Physical activities and sports play a big part in these student’s lives. Getting hands-on is a must
for these learners who love to tinker and learn best when they can do rather than see or hear.

Logical (mathematical) Learner

If there is logic, reasoning and numbers involved, these learners are sure to excel. These
students’ function and solve complex problems by employing strategies and their scientific way
of thinking. Computer programming, math and science are usually favored by these types of
learners.

Social (interpersonal) Learner

Learning in groups and working with others is favored by social learners. These students know
how to communicate effectively and enjoy collaborating with others, brainstorming and
discussing ideas and concepts. Social learners are generally good listeners who are thoughtful
and understanding.

Solitary (intrapersonal) Learner

These students prefer to use self-study and work alone. They are independent and are very self-
aware and in tune with their thoughts and feelings. These learners prefer being away from the
crowds and learn best in a quiet place where they can focus on the task at hand.

Knowing your learning style is not meant to limit you, but to expand you – by helping you
to work, learn and live more efficiently. You can start using these learning styles in your day-to-
day life to grasp concepts faster and with ease.

Moreover, here are good study habits that you can use especially at this time of crisis.

1. Don't attempt to cram all your studying into one session.

Ever find yourself up late at night expending more energy trying to keep your eyelids open than
you are studying? If so, it's time for a change. Successful students typically space their work out
over shorter periods of time and rarely try to cram all their studying into just one or two
sessions. If you want to become a successful student then you need to learn to be consistent in
your studies and to have regular, yet shorter, study periods.

2. Plan when you're going to study.

Successful students schedule specific times throughout the week when they are going to study --
and then they stick with their schedule. Students who study sporadically and whimsically
typically do not perform as well as students who have a set study schedule. Even if you're all
caught up with your studies, creating a weekly routine, where you set aside a period of time a
few days a week, to review your courses will ensure you develop habits that will enable you to
succeed in your education long term.

3. Study at the same time.

Not only is it important that you plan when you're going to study, it's important you create a
consistent, daily study routine. When you study at the same time each day and each week,
you're studying will become a regular part of your life. You'll be mentally and emotionally more
prepared for each study session and each study session will become more productive. If you
must /change your schedule from time to time due to unexpected events, that's okay, but get
back on your routine as soon as the event has passed.

4. Each study time should have a specific goal.

Simply studying without direction is not effective. You need to know exactly what you need to
accomplish during each study session. Before you start studying, set a study session goal that
supports your overall academic goal (i.e., memorize 30 vocabulary words in order to ace the
vocabulary section on an upcoming Spanish test.)

5. Never procrastinate your planned study session.

It's very easy, and common, to put off your study session because of lack of interest in the
subject, because you have other things you need to get done, or just because the assignment is
hard. Successful students DO NOT procrastinate studying. If you procrastinate your study
session, your studying will become much less effective, and you may not get everything
accomplished that you need to. Procrastination also leads to rushing, and rushing is the number
one cause of errors.

6. Start with the most difficult subject first.

As your most difficult assignment or subject will require the most effort and mental energy, you
should start with it first. Once you've completed the most difficult work, it will be much easier to
complete the rest of your work. Believe it or not, starting with the most difficult subject will
greatly improve the effectiveness of your study sessions, and your academic performance.

7. Always review your notes before starting an assignment.

Obviously, before you can review your notes you must first have notes to review. Always make
sure to take good notes in class. Before you start each study session, and before you start a
particular assignment, review your notes thoroughly to make sure you know how to complete
the assignment correctly. Reviewing your notes before each study session will help you
remember important subject matter learned during the day, and make sure your studying is
targeted and effective.

8. Make sure you're not distracted while you're studying.

Everyone gets distracted by something. Maybe it's the TV. Or maybe it's your family. Or maybe
it's just too quiet. Some people actually study better with a little background noise. When you're
distracted while studying you (1) lose your train of thought and (2) are unable to focus -- both of
which will lead to very ineffective studying. Before you start studying, find a place where you
won't be disturbed or distracted. For some people this is a quiet cubicle in the recesses of the
library. For others it is in a common area where there is a little background noise.

Processing:
1. How do you plan to improve your study habits during this time of pandemic?
_By always reviewing your notes before starting an assignment and avoid distractions
like excessive use of gadgets. Always stay organized and set a schedule for you to study.
Also start with the most difficult subject first and focused one thing at a time._
