Modern Contemporary Dance comes from the structured nature of ballet that
composed of various genre including, jazz, modern, and lyrical. It is an expressive
dance style that the dancers connect the mind to the body through dance
movements. The dance emerge during mid-20th and became popular today. Dancers
as well as the choreographers have freedom of their movements that allows them to
express their innermost feelings. An American pioneer named Isadora Duncan has a
great influence on the contemporary dance history. Her self-styled dancing leads her
to become the “Mother of Modern Dance”. In the Philippines, Alice Reyes a National
Artist for dance where called the “The Mother of Contemporary Dance”. Today the
Contemporary Dance has mix styles and the performers create improvise concepts
to perform an own unique styles.
Elements are the foundation of every dance genre. Learning these elements
can develop unique floor patterns to every performance.
1. Theme - the basic element of contemporary dance because it conveys the story
line or concept of the dance.
2. Design – the pattern of movements in time and space.
3. Movement – involved the bodily actions including the steps of the
performer.
4. Technique – the style of movements executed by the dancer.
5. Music – the auditory background to which a dancer moves.
6. Costume and Body Paraphernalia - worn by the dancer that will help to show the
story line.
7. Choreography – the Floor pattern or the transition of dancers to move and perform
in an organized manner
8. Scenery – the setting where the dance is performed to make it more realistic.
Physical Benefits
1. The reduction of the blood pressure and cholesterol levels of the body, increasing
the concentration of high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good” cholesterol in the
blood) thus, reduces chances for coronary heart disease such as stroke.
2. It stimulates digestion making digestion more efficient that helps to reduce
chances for colon cancer. It also improve the body’s speed, balance, coordination,
strength, power, agility and attentiveness.
Mental Benefits
1. It increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates growth of nerve cells in memory
center of the brain which greatly improves various indexes of psychological
functioning
2. It enhances brain functioning by increasing the amount of oxygen available to it
thus it increases thinking capacity and the sense of wellbeing.
Emotional Benefits
1. This can help you deal with stress and reduce your risk of depression.
2. It also Increases resistance to pain because endorphin levels are elevated,
increases sense of excitement because hormone epinephrine is elevated and
reduces stress by removing lactic acid from blood.
Social Benefits
1. Improves self-esteem and self-confidence since body and mind are improved and
strengthened.
2. The improved physical appearance could make people feel good about themselves
making it easier to socialize and have new friends.
Spiritual Benefit
Dance delivers a fresh supply of blood and oxygen to the brain. This clears the
mind of stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, and anger. A healthy body has a healthy
mind and a well-functioning brain increases the following;
1. Ability to benefit from reading the Bible, to focus in prayer, and be sensitive to
the needs of those around.
2. A strong healthy body leads to invigorate our spiritual life.
