What I Need to Know

This module is intended for you to plan and conceptualize an ICT Project
for Social Change and identify the platforms that will help you in the success of
your campaign.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned how ICTs have changed the way
people communicated and how ICTs served as tools to create social change. Name a
specific example of ICTs/technologies which helped improved communication when
we, Filipinos needed it the most.

What’s New

There are people campaigning for something that would mean something to
change. These campaigns might be something about prevention of cyber bullying,
health awareness due to COVID 19 cases, anti-drug campaign, proper garbage
disposal, blocked drainage, water shortage or something else that is significant. We
usually see these in TV commercials, social media, and other websites.

You were asked to list down 5 community problems in the previous activity
and chose one which you think of highest priority and needs immediate action of
change. After identifying a specific community problem, what will be your next
step?

What is It

Creating a Concept Paper:

Before starting a project, you should be able to do necessary paperwork to

see if your project is doable over the time frame that was given and if it is
significant enough to be made into a reality.

4
A concept paper is a document used to convince a panel of potential funders
to help a product, program, or service to become a reality. Your teacher will play
the role of the sponsor and you must convince him or her that your project is worth
your time and effort.

There are five elements of a concept paper:

1. Introduction - includes tour group’s mission and vision and a brief introduction
of your project.

2. Purpose - includes the reasons why this project is worth your group and your
sponsor’s time, effort and money.

3. Description - includes all the necessary information about the project. In ICT, it
involves the sites you are going to produce and the purpose of each and how they
work in unison.

4. Support - contains the budget needed for the project. Some concept papers do
not specify any amount requested from the sponsor.

5. Contact information - includes information on how the individual/group be

contacted.

Sample Concept Paper

For years many students depend on the school’s drinking fountain. Aside
from saving them money, the school’s drinking fountain contains filters that make
the water safe enough to drink. But according to our research, the last time the
water was tested was about three years ago and by using the drinking fountains
around school, it is highly questionable that the water is still safe for drinking. Our
group has theorized that the natural wear-and-tear of the drinking fountain has led
to the water’s unpleasant taste. Our group, The Mosaic Alliance, aims to create
several online sources that will help promote the awareness of people involved
about this problem and create an online petition with the goal of improving our
drinking fountains here in school.

Our group aims to create change.org petition, a Facebook group and a blog
to help achieve our goals. We will be creating infographics and other related
information connected to the dangers of drinking unsafe water especially a young
age. The scope of our project is to be able to search the school’s administration,
parents, teachers, and students to sign our petition.

We will be requiring a week to develop this project and we will start our
promotion right after we have uploaded the website. We will also be using our own
resources so the funding for this project will be close to none. Our expenses may
only include the printing of campaign materials, internet and computer shop

rentals in case we need more time outside school hours. We will also be using free
services already offered by Facebook, Blogger and Change.org.

Should you have any questions about our project feel free to contact us at
[email protected].

Simplified ICT Project Process Overview:

Planning —> Development —> Release and Promotion —> Maintenance

1. Planning – involves the following task (but not limited to):

 Conceptualizing your project

 Researching on available data about your topic
 Setting deadlines and meetings
 Assigning people to various tasks
 Finding a web or blog host
 Creating a site map for tour website
 Listing down all applications, that you need including web apps
 Funding (If applicable)

2. Development – involves the actual creation of the website(s), involves the

production of images, infographics, etc.

Medias you can use:

 Text
 Videos
 Pictures
 Audio
 Websites

3. Release and Promotion – involves the actual release of the website for public
view and promoting it. Promotion typically starts before the actual release.

4. Maintenance – involves responding to feedback of your site visitors and

continuing to improve your website.

INFOGRAPHICS AND I.C.T PROJECTS

An infographic (information graphics) is a representation of information in a

graphic format designed to make the data easily understandable immediately.
People use infographics to quickly communicate a message, to simplify the
representation of large amounts of data, to see data patterns and relationships,
and to monitor changes and variables over time.

PRINCIPLES IN CREATING AN INFOGRAPHICS:

6
Be Creative – you can use the combination of text, shapes, and images to present
your message in a creative way.

Be Unique – your message must be something people can relate to, but it must be
presented in a unique way to attract the viewers’ attention. Present it in a
surprising and exciting way to draw attention.

Be Simple – presenting a simple, yet elegant design will attract more attention than
cluttered elements that may bore the audiences.

Use graphics and visuals – you can illustrate your point with pictures, typography,
and color.

Use the Forwarding tool – it is important that the viewer will be able to easily click
“share” after reading your infographics so that your message can be forwarded and
read by as many people as possible.

WAYS THAT INFOGRAPHICS CAN BE USED:

Presenting survey data - Infographics are highly useful in presenting results

gathered from survey data. When organized in an infographic, it becomes much
easier and faster to draw meaning from data.

Simplifying a complicated concept -The core purpose of an infographics is to

simplify a complex idea which makes them great educational tools, especially when
presenting an overview of a topic instead of an in-depth analysis.

Explaining how things work - In addition to simplifying complex ideas,

infographics are often used to reveal the mechanics behind how objects work.

Comparisons - When drawing comparisons, infographics help organize similarities

and differences by visually creating parallels that complement the information
being presented.
