Digital audio broadcasting (DAB) was developed toward the end of the 1980s. The first
networks were installed in the 1990s. The real breakthrough in Germany finally came in 2011
when the networks were expanded to DAB+ networks, the transmitter density was increased
and the number of programs was enlarged. Thanks to the implementation of the new MPEG-4
HE AAC audio codec, DAB+ is also available alongside the classic DAB.

This DAB/DAB+ introductory seminar will give engineers and technicians an overview of the
special features of DAB compared with DVB technologies, and explain their differences and
opportunities. The complete scope of DAB/DAB+, from MPEG/MUSICAM audio coding to the
basic DAB data signal structure (ETI and STI) to the DAB transmit signal will be discussed.
