GRAMMAR
おはようございます
Ohay ō (おはよう) is the greeting that means "good morning." Ohay ō gozaimasu (おはよ
うございます) is a more polite greeting, because gozaimasu (ございます) increases the
politeness level of the phrase.
こんにちは
Konnichi wa (こんにちは) is the general greeting that means "hi" or "hello. It can also
means "good day".
こんばんは
Konban wa (こんばんは) is the greeting that means "good evening." It comes from the
おやすみなさい
Oyasumi nasai (おやすみなさい) is a phrase which is usually used before going to bed.
This comes from the verb, yasumu (休む) which means "to take a rest" or "to go to bed."
O- (お) is the prefix to add the politeness of a phrase. So, it literally means "please go to
bed" in a polite way.

When you say Oyasuminasai (おやすみなさい) to your family or close friend, you can say
just Oyasumi (おやすみ) in a casual way.
