Hi everybody, I’m Lala and we will be discussing the Features of

Gatekeeping:
* The function of gatekeeping is surveillance.
* Gatekeeping sets the standard for newsworthiness.
* Media plays a role of a watchdog.
* Information moves in a step by step process in a structure.

* It is also used as a social control for media influence.

Line 1: In exercising its "surveillance" function, every news

medium has a very large number of stories brought to its attention
daily by reporters, wire services, and a variety of other sources.

Line 2: The audience needs to know what they are reading is

truthful and honest, and as the conventional role of a journalist is
to serve the public and maintain ethical conduct, this is where
gatekeeping is still significant in our diverse media environment.

Line 3 : Gatekeeping hold influence on policies and procedures

that is why Media or Gatekeepers plays a vital role of a watchdog
within society or simply playing into the audience’s confirmation
bias.

Line 4: Information moves step by step through channels and

The number of channels varies and the amount of time in each
channel can also vary.
Line 5: There is need for gatekeeping journalists, especially due to
the high consumption rates of clickbait, fake news and non-
journalistic social media pages. This is because professional
journalists need to assert control over news construction, as there
needs to be a regulated system which audiences can access for
educational and topical news.

We, humans are also our own gatekeepers at the point of

consumption and creating a secondary filter for information.

What’s the difference of agenda setting theory & gatekeeping

theory.
Answer:
Honestly, Confusing talaga siya.. but Agenda setting theory siguro is the idea that the
media sets the agenda by selecting the topics that it covers to the media or to the
audience. Basically, agenda setting has media influence, how it is measured and the ... ability
to affect other people's thinking in a social online community.

While Gatekeeping po it refers to the idea that too many events occur for the media to
cover all
Kaya finifilter ng gatekeeper , so it must therefore choose which ones to specifically
cover.

Examples of Gatekeeping:
Examples of gatekeepers in the media are editors, producer,
reporters, directors etc. As a direct example, in the news
medium the editor plays the vital role. Commonly referred to as
Mr. Gates. He or She has to decide what kind of news items will
be published and what should not. Every day the news channel
receives various news items from all over the world. The channel
has its own set of ethics, policies, and biases through which the
editor decides the news items that will be published, aired, or
killed.
Through this process, the unwanted, sensible and controversial
information’s are removed by the gatekeeper which helps to control
the society or a group and letting them in a right path.

Line 1: For instance,

Here, N is the source of the news

While, N 1,2,3,4 are the news items

N 1, 4 are not selected news items

N 2, 3 are selected news items that passes through this gate that
selected by the gatekeepers. To be published for the audience.

A is the audience

Line 1: Clickbait takes up majority of the articles on social media

for more ‘likes’. The problem with these online headlines, is that
audiences can perceive them as relevant and reliable news
sources when they are most likely not, If an audience is not critical
enough of these sources, and they shift their attention towards
these online social atmospheres, it diminishes the need for good
journalism, as these could be the same audiences that believe
anyone who writes an article or an opinion piece is immediately a
journalist.
Line 2: In our home, our mother plays a vital role and has to decide
what their children needs and what should avoid. Same as the
gatekeepers in the media industry, they decide what information
should be published and what information should not.
