Characteristics of Effective Technical Writing


The Four C’s:
Clarity- it easily understood by your intended audience
Comprehensiveness- all of the necessary information is present
Conciseness- it is clear without excess verbiage
Correctness- it is grammatical and follows conventions

Properties of Technical Writing (ABC’s of Report Writing)


Accuracy- Checking the whole statement and how they are put together.
Brevity- Making the respect short, readable and easy to comprehend for the busy people.
Coherence- Arranging of materials together. All sentences and groups of paragraph must hold
together through the use of transitional devices.
Confidence- The write must be sure on what he is writing through using exact words. “Perhaps
and Maybe’s must be avoided.
Dignity- Formality in respect to the used of words. Grammar must check and use
straightforward expressions.
Emphasis- This is making an idea stand out among the rest in the texts. This can be achieved
through the use of illustrations and transitional devices to lead the readers to the important
details.
Facility- Making the report easy to read. Used short familiar words and sentences.
Grammatical Correctness- Use correct grammar by following basic grammar rules. Checking
sentences for its logical and clearness. Statements must have a “Sense”
Honesty- It acknowledging the use of the other written works/ideas.
Illustration- The use of Graphs, visual, charts, diagrams, and photos. These are used to clarify
or to support the text.
Judgment- Judicious weighing of evidences used in the report.

Knowledge- Collecting and interpretation date which also involved formulation conclusion.
Logic- It is thinking straight. A process of putting things in their proper places.

4. Statements must make sense
5. Judgments must not be based on a few data
6. Cause and effect must clearly use
7. Conclusion must not be inferred
8. Authority must not be used if it is biased.
Mechanical Neatness- Putting the report in perfect shape. Neatly type and well margined.
Proper use of headings and sub-headings must be observed.
Objectivity- A writer’s assuming a detached, impartial point of view. This is writing for
uninterested readers. Avoid using “I” “Me” and “My”
Qualification- This refers to the background of the writer. Readers have to consider the
background of the writer for them to decide whether the report is valid or not.
Straight Sentences- This refers to use of sentences in the report. Sentences in the report.
Sentences must contain the right idea what the writer wants to say. Transitional devices are
helpful for the readers to follow the thought.
Thoroughness- Making the report complete as what you want it from the beginning until you
finish the report.

Unity- This refers to the oneness of the details and facts in the report. They must have a clear
relevance to the point under discussion.
Veracity- This refers to reporting the facts only. No shifting the issues.
Viewpoint- This refers to certain voice talking in the report. The viewpoint must be consistent
throughout the report.
Word Choice- This refers to the proper use of the words and expressions that the readers
understand. Avoid vague jargons/words and expressions.
You-point- Writing through understanding the readers’ comprehension level, experience and
needs.

Zest- The writer must enjoy what he is writing.

Choose one topic/issue from below. Write an informative essay following the basic general
format of an essay– Introduction, Body paragraphs, and Conclusion. And apply the
characteristics and properties of TW in your writing.

Topic: (B) Inequality across Social Classes


A social class is a group of people living in the society with a high social ranking
based on their income, education, Status in life and on their power. And because of this, a gap
between those social class kind of people and of those lower class people arise. With this, the
people divided into rich and into the poor.
The most common problem between the upper class people and the lower class
people is discrimination. The discrimination because of the known fact that some of the lower
class people has no Education, Wealth, and Power. The discrimination especially of those
native tribes because of the fact that those people are living in a remote areas where no
education because far from school, no internet connection, far from hospitals, no electricity, no
television. In fact, behind in every single way. Discrimination arise because the upper class of
people think in a way that they have the power and wealth.
To stop the discrimination, the government must take action and provide what is
needed for everyone in order for us to have peace, equality and jusctice.

Ans: I think that I have to improve my writing skills by means of improving my vocabulary.
What is challenging about writing essays?
Ans: It is very challenging because you need to catch up an idea but then you realize that you
don’t know how to write the grammar properly and you don’t know what is the exact word that
need to be used.
