Cefazolin (Drug Study)

Cefazolin is a cephalosporin antibiotic given intravenously or intramuscularly. It works by inhibiting the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, arresting cell wall assembly and causing bacterial cell death. Cefazolin is indicated for susceptible bacterial infections including sepsis, respiratory, biliary or GU tract, skin and bone infections and surgical prophylaxis. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins or penicillins. Adverse effects include diarrhea, nausea, rash and renal or hepatic dysfunction. Nurses should monitor for signs of pseudomembranous colitis or seizures.
