LESSON 1: CHURCH AS TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Objectives
The lesson is ordered to enable students to:

Doctrine: Understand that the Holy Spirit dwells in the Church

and in the hearts of the faithful as in a temple (LG4)

Morals: The Church, the temple of the Holy Spirit, are called to
be holy by loving and serving God and others
Worship: Invoke the help of the Holy Spirit to sanctify each
member so as to live out their identity as his living temples on
earth
Activity: The Holy Spirit
Guides His People through the
Church

A. JESUS’ APPEARANCE TO THE DISCIPLES

(Jn. 20: 21-23)
A. JESUS’ APPEARANCE TO THE DISCIPLES
(Jn. 20: 21-23)

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As

the Father has sent me, I am sending
you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them
and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you
forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven;
if you do not forgive them, they are not
forgiven.”
Jn. 20, 21-23 (Jesus’ Appearance to the Disciples)

Guide Questions
Why did Jesus appear to the disciples?
What was Jesus’ greeting to them?
What did Jesus tell them?
What did Jesus give them?
(His Spirit when He breathed on them and said “Receive
the Holy Spirit.”
A. JESUS’ APPEARANCE TO
THE DISCIPLES (Jn. 20: 21-23)

The disciples were able to live in

Communion with one another through the
help of the Holy Spirit who empowers them
to be a Church bringing God’s love to
everyone.
Jesus Appears To The Disciples (John 20:19-23)

Most of Jesus’ original disciples were gathered

together. The disciples had locked themselves in
a room to hide.

The Pharisees, the Jewish leaders .They were

hiding from the Jewish leaders who had
demanded that Jesus be killed. The disciples
thought they were in danger because they were
close followers of Jesus.
In addition, the Roman guards had lied and said
that the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body. The
disciples were afraid for good reason!

Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, “May peace be with
you!” Then He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples
were very happy when they saw the Lord. - John 20:19b-20

Jesus walked in - right through a locked door.

Because His friends were afraid, His very first
words were words of comfort.
Again Jesus said, “May peace be with you!
The Father has sent Me. So now I am
sending you.” He then breathed on them.
He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you
forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If
you do not forgive them, they are not
forgiven.” - John 20:21-23
Jesus breathed on them as a symbol that
He was going to send the Holy Spirit to
them very soon (Acts 2:4). The Holy Spirit
would be poured out on them, and it
would fill their souls, just like breath fills
our lungs. Only the power of the Holy
Spirit would give them the strength to go
OUT into the world that they were now
hiding from.
Application: Jesus’ plan included the men
who had made very big mistakes. These were
not special men. They were regular people. At
times they were weak; at times they lacked
faith; at times they thought only of
themselves. God sends the Holy Spirit to live
inside of ALL believers (1 Corinthians 6:19).
He will use me - and you - when we allow the
Holy Spirit to guide our steps. He has the
power, not us!
Jesus’ awesome promises about the Holy Spirit

• God would send the Holy Spirit after Jesus

left them
• He would be their Friend
• He would teach the disciples
• He would help the disciples
• He would remind the disciples of what
Jesus said
B. THE SENDING OF THE SPIRIT
TO THE CHURCH

All the baptized have

become God’s temple
through Baptism. In them,
the Spirit prays and bears
witness to their being
God’s children. The Spirit
guides the Church in the
way of all truth ….(Cf. LG4).
By virtue of Baptism,
Catholics received the Holy
Spirit and therefore gained
new life in Christ. They
have become God’s
children, redeemed by
Christ and temples of the
Holy Spirit.
Group activity and
discussion

What does the Holy Spirit do in one’s life?

1. The Spirit adopts us (CFC1310)

2. The Spirit empowers us to love (CFC
1311)
3. The Spirit empowers us to bear
witness to Jesus Christ (CFC 1312)
4. The Spirit empowers us to know the
Truth (CFC1313)

5. The Spirit Draws us into Community,

Unity and Service (CFC1314)

6. The Spirit inspires True Christian Life

(CFC 1315)
1. The Spirit adopts us(CFC 1340)

Through baptism, they have

become God’s adopted children
and living temples of the Spirit.
2. The Spirit empowers us to love (CFC 1311)

With the Spirit, they are fortified to love God

who loved them first as well as love and forgive
others especially those who have done wrong to
them.
3. The Spirit empowers us to bear
witness to Jesus Christ (CFC 1312)

It is the Spirit who strengthens them to

be witnesses to Christ through the gift
of fortitude.
The persecuted Christians in Iraq testifies to the fact that
that “Spirit empowers us to bear witness to Jesus Christ”
(CFC 1312). They are not afraid to bear witness to Christ
faith even if the consequences are death or being exiled
from their native land.
4. The Spirit empowers us to know
the Truth (CFC1313)

To be a follower of Christ
and be a liar at the same
time can never go hand in
hand. Therefore, they are
called to seek the truth
and uphold it at all times
since they are following
Christ who is the Truth.
The Spirit will help them
to stand for the truth.
5. The Spirit Draws us into Community, Unity
and Service (CFC1314)

It is the Holy Spirit who

empowers them to be united
with one another in the
Church and in Communion
with Christ.
6. The Spirit inspires
True Christian Life (CFC
1315)

It is in communicating to God in prayer

and asking for His grace and
enlightenment that they would be
helped to discern. Asking for the advice
of trusted adults will also be of help.

C. THE CHURCH AS THE TEMPLE OF
THE HOLY SPIRIT

Since believers have become part of

God’s family, the Church, each one is
called to live in communion with one
another and with Christ as the Head
of the Church. United in prayer, they
invoke the help of the Holy Spirit for
unity in the Church.
The Spirit’s Activity in the Church (CFC 1300-1305)
“The Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and the
Risen Christ, that gave birth to the first
Christian community, the apostolic Church”
(CFC 1301). Until today the Holy Spirit
continues to exercise three functions: to give
life to, to unify, and to move the whole body
(CFC 1302-1305).
1. THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE IN THE CHURCH.
When in the womb of the
baptismal font, the Spirit begets to
a new life those who believe in
Christ, He gathers them into the
one People of God which is a
‘chosen race, a royal priesthood, a
holy nation, a purchased people’ (1
Peter 2:9; AG 15).
The Filipinos experienced the
Holy Spirit at work in the
Philippine Church especially
during the 1986EDSA
revolution. Their recent history
reminds Filipino Catholics of
the Spirit’s role in our local
Church today (CFC 1306).

as an historical event with a religious
dimension that continues to call us to
be a people who work for conversion,
reconciliation and peace in the way of

2. THE SPIRIT UNIFIES THE CHURCH by
uniting its members with Christ and with
one another (CFC 1303).

3) THE SPIRIT MOVES THE CHURCH

TOWARDS ITS MISSION AND MINISTRY (CFC
1305).

The Spirit continues to inspire many people to

serve the Church through different forms of
apostolate which are in line with the needs
and signs of the times.
Being the Vicar of Christ on earth, Pope Francis
shows God’s People what it means to be a
dwelling place of God through acts of charity
especially to the poor:
