CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION

Because of the Covid19 pandemic College for Research and Technology now
offered online classes as a variable alternative to traditional face to face instructions.
However considerate concern and problems have developed particularly as it relates
to quality of online and modular learning. Online education has the following
provides of learning experience different than traditional classroom, because every
have their different kind of learning not all of them can provide their needs and lack
of gadgets the required by online and modular class. The COVID-19 pandemic forced
many higher education institutions (HEIs) across the world to cancel face-to-face
teaching, close campus facilities, and displace staff and students to work and learn
from home. Given the persistent nature of the pandemic, many HEIs have continued
to deliver courses online and/or use a blended learning approach. However, there are
concerns around differences in student access to digital learning resources while at
home, including high quality broadband connectivity. This is important, since
variation in connectivity may impact the type of online/blended model that faculty can
deliver or constrain student engagement with online content. (Legaspi, 2020)

During the lockdown, students were on the global level ‘most of the time’ or
‘all of the time’ worrying about their professional career in the future and study
issues, lectures, seminars, practical work. Some students’ fears were to continue their
study amidst of the rapid changes in learning modality. (De Guzman, 2020)

In related with the first article, due to the spread of the virus and the closure of
physical classes, online learning through the uses of several devices like computers,
laptops, tablets and mobile phones with internet access become the alternative
learning methods. Students having a hard time and sometimes losing their hope to
study because of so many reasons. (Algahtani, 2015)

According to Pham (2020), other students need to stop because they are lack
6

in equipment or things to use in order to survive online classes. Despite of all the

hardships government, teachers and other connected institution are doing their best to
make it success at the end. However, the online learning can be challenging to the
disabled, underprivileged, and marginalized students who had limited resources and
accessibility to online learning. This inability to access and involve in online learning
causes the disparity and dropout among them. Online learning also requires students’
commitment and discipline, especially for vulnerable students who need interaction
that allows them to strengthen their social skills.

In this manner, the researchers conducted this study to determine the Factors of
distance learning in pursuing grade 12 level for HUMSS students amidst of Covid-19
in College for Research and Technology-San Jose Campus.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
LOCAL LITERATURE
This section reviews the factors and effects of distant learning to the students and
teachers amidst of Covid-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many higher
education institutions (HEIs) across the world to cancel face-to-face teaching, close
campus facilities, and displace staff and students to work and learn from home. Given
the persistent nature of the pandemic, many HEIs have continued to deliver courses

high quality broadband connectivity. This is important, since variation in connectivity
may impact the type of online/blended model that faculty can deliver or constrain
student engagement with online content. (Legaspi, 2020)
The COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for tectonic changes in the lives of many
groups in the population, thus also of higher education students. As expected, based
on previous epidemics, students hold specific worries or concerns about their short-
and long-term future too. During the lockdown, students were on the global level
‘most of the time’ or ‘all of the time’ worrying about their professional career in the
future and study issues, lectures, seminars, practical work. Some students’ fears were
to continue their study amidst of the rapid changes in learning modality. (De Guzman,
2020)
Different way of learning has something to do with the Academic Performance of the
students. Every student has their own way of understanding through different things.
Since now that the generation is in technology based. People carried by time and
blinded by different kind of gadgets. Today, especially now during this pandemic they
implemented distance learning. Institute used materials which is a combination of
technology and modules where students can learn and open their study at home
without having a physical contact with people outside. In that way they learned and
continue their studies despite of the virus and during hard times. (Benito, 2021)

FOREIGN LITERATURE
According to Kim, Hong and Song (2019), E-learning or electronic learning is more
efficient than physical learning since before because it is less hassle. Also, most of the
authors came from different countries says that education must improve and came
along with our technology-based generation. As part of it they see that today in this
time of pandemic, students improve their skills and be more hardworking in their
study to strive their unfulfilled goals. Their deeper engagement can lead them to
beneficial educational practices, which further lead to comprehensive learning. And
11

the use of Technology is one of the major factors for the student to pursue studies

regardless of the threat of Covid-19.

The rise of online modes of content delivery, termed e-learning, has increased
student convenience and provided geographically remote students with more options
for tertiary education. However, its efficacy relies upon student access to suitable
technology and the internet, and the quality of the online course material. With the
COVID-19 outbreak, education providers worldwide were forced to turn to e-learning
to retain their student base and allow them to continue learning through the pandemic.
However, in geographically remote, developing nations, many students may not have
access to suitable technology or internet connections. Hence, most of the students are
still wanted to continue with their studies. (Johnson, Reddy, Chand, 2021)
There are two modes in online learning, which are synchronous and asynchronous
depending on the application of applying optional timing of interaction (Algahtani,
2015). The synchronous online learning provides the direct interaction between the
lecturers and students during class through tools such as videoconference or
chartrooms. While asynchronous online learning provides the opportunity for the
lecturers and students to interact before or after the online class through thread
discussion and emails. The online learning provides advantages in independent
learning and developing new skills in the process leading to life-long learning just to
continue their studies especially for the Senior High School in times of this pandemic.
In related with the first article, due to the spread of the virus and the closure of
physical classes, online learning through the uses of several devices like computers,

However, the online learning can be challenging to the disabled, underprivileged, and

This inability to access and involve in online learning causes the disparity and dropout
among them. Online learning also requires students’ commitment and discipline,
especially for vulnerable students who need interaction that allows them to strengthen

RECOMMENDATION
1. The researchers recommend a reduction in cognitive load and increase
interactivities during distance learning. Those in clinical years suggested
ways to start online case based learning. However, some were also of the
opinion that there should be revision classes along with psychomotor
hands on teaching after COVID 19 pandemic is under control. To enhance
quality, they suggested buying premium software and other proctoring
software to detect cheating and plagiarism.
2. Examine the readiness and choose the most relevant tools.
3. Plan the study schedule of the distance learning programmers.
