Sciography in Sciography in Architecture Architecture

Sciography is the study of shades and shadows in architecture. Shadows are used in architectural drawings to better convey the third dimension of depth and the form of surfaces. The shape of a shadow depends on the position of the light source, the position and form of the object casting the shadow, and the form of the surface receiving the shadow. To determine the shadow cast by a complex form, it must be broken down into its simplest geometric components and the overall shadow pattern will be a composite of these individual shadows. Shadows are a useful tool in architectural drawings to aid perception of space and indicate changes in height or topography.
