Ans. the following questions.

1. Differentiate traditional animation from digital animation (2d Digital Animation).

(10 points)
Answer: The traditional animation uses methods that don’t involve any kind of digital
tools. It usually refers to animation hand-drawn on paper. It was the process used for
most of the productions throughout the 20th century. An animator draws the characters,
layout and backgrounds on paper. However, Digital Animation (2D Digital Animation) is
the art of creating movement in a two-dimensional space. This includes characters,
creatures, FX and backgrounds. The illusion of movement is created when individual
drawings are sequenced together over time. This allows artists to save on production
time/costs and gives 2D animation its unique look.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and digital animation
(2d Digital Animation). (10 points)
Answer:
Traditional Animation
Advantages
Traditional animation’s main advantage is with 2D drawings, you can defy the laws of
physics. Anything you want can happen. You want a character to stretch in abnormal
ways to express exaggeration in an emotion? Then you can stretch that character as far
as you desire, which is seen in many Disney Mickey Mouse Cartoons. All you need is a
pencil and paper and that character is cute and lovable. Pixar struggled greatly to do
this in the short “Tin Tin,” which can be easily done with traditional animation.
This leads to my argument that technical animation is not as easy to manipulate. You
have to work around 3D software and the laws and rules to which things are held
together within the software.
Disadvantages:
Time Consuming
Animators draw individual frames for each scene. The large numbers of drawings and
the photography time required in completing a production consumes schedules and can
result in delays. Reliance of a large crew of animators makes it difficult to speed up
production as each animator works at a different speed. Traditional animation takes
more time compared to computer animation, which uses animation software to speed
up the process.
Correcting mistakes
A mistake in traditional animation requires you to repeat the whole drawing instead of
deleting and correcting a mistake. The repetition of work can become tiresome and time
consuming. Artistic corrections for quality animations are costly, as they demand
repetition of an entire task. Repetition of tasks to correct mistakes involves a large crew
incurring the production more costs.
Costs
Traditional animation requires a numbers of tools and equipment per production. They
include drawing tools, tracing tools, and photographic equipment. It also requires a large
crew to draw the characters, draw backgrounds and shoot photos of the final images.
Lack of a market
Traditional animation requires the use of a wide range of special artistic tools. Large
rooms are required for the entire process, from drawing, tracing to photography, and
finally filming. The size of traditional equipment like the rostrum camera demands a lot
of space. Production requires large spaces for working and storage. Computer
animation relies on software and a number of computer processors to speed up the
process.
Digital Animation (2D Animation)
Advantages:
Low production cost – Not every production team can afford the added expense of
harnessing 3D technology.
Quick time – Production lead time is low. It is quicker to produce 2D animation.
Less complex – It is easier to produce a 2D animated sequence over its 3D counterpart
due to less involvement of technology & software.
Tried & tested – The method has been around since the late 1800s & works every
single time.
Easy to fix – It is very simple to fix errors in 2D animation. If it looks wrong, just redraw
it.
Disadvantages:
Old can be boring – Traditional animation can sometimes appear mundane. There is no
comparison of quality between 2D & 3D animation; the latter wins hands down.
Audience demand – 3D animation is fast capturing the market. Very few people prefer
to watch 2D animation movies as compared to its 3D counterpart.
Economic reasons – Not all 2D animation is simple to make. Sometimes, it takes less
time and money to create a sequence in 3D due to advances in computer technology.
Time is money – Several movie studios are giving up 2D animation altogether because
it is time consuming to create cell-based animation templates, which can never be
reused.
Expertise – 2D animation requires a workforce that is able to draw & sketch. This is not
mandatory for 3D animation.

3. Identify and give the functions of the drawing tools/instruments and equipment
used in traditional and digital animation (2d Digital Animation). (10 points)
Answer:
Stylus Pen- Drawing on pen-and-paper can take you a long way, but you'll eventually
have to make the transition to drawing on a computer. Using a stylus pen on your tablet
can help you get used to using a screen as your canvas so you can make the switch to
digital art more easily.
Small Graphics tablet- Once you're ready to break into the digital art scene, then you'll
definitely need a graphics tablet. You can hook it up to your computer and start refining
your art skills by having your sketches transfer right to your screen.
Drawing Gloves- Avoid the hassle of sweaty hands running along your tablet and
impeding your drawing. These gloves reduce the friction between your hands on the
screen to keep your drawing precise.
Large Graphic Tablet- Once your skills start to level up, so will your art, so your graphics
tablet will need to keep up with your growing imagination.
Flash Animation Program- When you start to actually animate things, then you'll need
the software to watch your creations come to life.

3ds Max (Autodesk) - This commercial animation software tool allows digital artists to
produce 3D animations, including developing models and rendering them into 2D or 3D
images.
After Effects (Adobe) - Digital artists can use this commercial tool to add visual effects
and motion graphics elements to film, TV, video, online content, presentations, and
more.
Animate (Adobe) - Users can create animations across multiple media, from cartoons
and banner ads to interactive content for games, TV shows, academic content, and
infographics.
Blender (The blender Foundation) - This free open source 3D graphics creation suite
offers a comprehensive feature set to create animations, digital art, visual effects, 2D
and 3D models, and more.
Lightbox –The essential features of this equipment is to have the light shine through
different layers of paper for tracing the in between.
Peg Bar – it is where paper is attached to the device so that the paper will not move as
the animator is doing the artwork.
Paper and Cel – there is no specific paper on which animation should be drawn as long
as it is big enough to flip. The paper should be translucent enough for you to see the
essentials of the next drawing through the top sheet.
Paper and Cel Punch - each animation is registered by placing each sheet or cel
consecutively on standardize registration pegs so it does not move in relation to other
sheets.
Graticule or 12” Field Chart - it is a grid system used to accurately create a field guides
in the layout. These guides are what the camera will see in the scene.
Bar Sheets and Dope Sheets - it is a traditional animation tool that enables an animator
to organize his/her thinking and give instructions to the cameraman on the shots
needed.
Production Folder - it is an essential for large- scale studio productions that the dope
sheet instructions for each scene be kept separate from each other.
Drawing Kit - there are different kinds of pencil that you may use in the drawing stage of
the animation process.
Non- photo Blue Pencils - are great for initial sketches. The right shade of pale blue
tend to not show up on copies when transferred from paper to clear cels.
Drawing Pencils - mechanical pencils may be used but for animation work, a regular
wooden pencil is best. 2b is usually the best hardness and are good for making dark
lines.
Paint, brush, pastels, and watercolors - used mostly for the background and the final
stage of the process.
Art Gum Eraser - these erasers are far superior to standard erasers because they rub
out lead cleanly without smudging away actual paper surface.
Digital camera and video camera - it is essential to test the full animation to checks its
movement.
Cartoon Animator 4 (Reallusion) - Digital artists across TV, film, web, and game
development using this versatile animation tool can create 2D animation with 3D
motion.

4. Search at least four (4) Philippine computer-animated films. Identify the

animation technique applied and describe each animation style. (20 points)

Adarna: The Mythical Bird

Adarna adapted the story of the eponymous folklore and turned it into cartoon. It took
animators plenty of time to finish voice recordings, drawings, and storyboards as part of
the cel animation technique. They used cel-animation technique (with 3D effects) and
need many hours of time for voice recording, storyboards, drawing and so on.
Dayo: Sa Mundo ng Elementalia
Dayo: Sa Mundo ng Elementalia (Tagalog for, roughly, "Stranger in the Land/World of
Elementalia", and often shortened just to Dayo) is a 2008 Filipino animated film. It
features Buboy, a precocious, school-aged kid, who acting on a dare by a gang of
school bullies, suddenly finds himself in the titular land of Elementalia a beautiful
fantasy land populated by all the creatures known to Philippine mythology and folklore,
including kapres, tikbalangs, aswangs, and those classic, self-segmenting Winged
Humanoids, manananggals—including young Anna, who quickly becomes his best
friend.
2D Visuals, 3D Effects: Most of the animation style is 2-D digital, but occasionally
obviously 3-D assets are used, like aeroplanes in flight, or the "ball" of sirenas (merfolk)
in one scene.
RPG Metanoia - is a 2010 Philippine 3D computer-animated adventure film produced by
Ambient Media, Thaumatrope Animation and Star Cinema. It is the first full length
Philippine animated movie presented in 3D. It was an official entry at the 2010 Metro
Manila Film Festival.
Some of the technique used in the film which did an impressive job is stereoscoping
image.Stereoscopic 3D is when you split an image into two (for the left and right eye) to
simulate how the human eye perceives depth.
Urduja (2008)
Urduja is created by an all-Filipino group of animators and made using the
traditional (hand-drawn) animation process. It also features an all-Filipino cast of voice
actors. Urduja was released on June 18, 2008. The running time of the movie is within
exactly 100 minutes.
