LESSON
Introduction to Art Appreciation

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
1. explore the concept of art;
2. understand the connection of humanities in art;
3. differentiate art history from art appreciation.

The main objective of this module is to guide you in appreciation of

arts. Appreciation has to do with valuing or loving something or someone
(Javellana, 2018). You can appreciate something if you fully understand it.
Art is everywhere, it is around us. But some of you would say “I do not like
art,” but you cannot deny that unconsciously you are with art everyday.
Start from styling your hair, choosing what is the best dress that will suit
with your occasion or even listening with your favorite songs, all of these
have something to do and part of art.

Let’s try this!

Remember what is your memorable encounter with art and name what kind
of art it is. In that art, list down 5 questions that comes into your mind and
explain if that questions have something to do with, why that kind of art is
memorable to you.

Art and Humanities:

Why Study Humanities

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Humanities

are branches of knowledge that concern themselves
with human beings and their culture or with analytic and
critical methods of inquiry derived from an appreciation of

human values and of the unique ability of the human spirit

to express itself. The humanities include the study of all
languages and literatures, the arts, history,
and philosophy.

In order to survive man tends to adopt in any

changes in their daily livings. A house started from “bahay
kubo” converted to “bahay na bato” that is more stable and
can endure stormy season and earthquake. A man who eat
with their bare hands and later develop fork and spoon.
Man discover fire that has a big contribution for another
development and discoveries. All these thing that is
discovered by man is connected to the meaning of the word
“art’.
Art comes from the Latin word “ars” meaning
anything humans make, or manmade (Javellana, 2018). It
is a human mind creation, that is well planned to create
something that is useful to man. As long as human can
think and force by the different changes in the
surroundings, it is expected that art will always exist.
Humanities and Art will never be separated to man,
this is a part of human expression. It can be seen in the
different development that human discovered.

Art and History:

What is Art history

Art History is the study when an art was created. It is

the study of the art meaning in the specific period of time,
when it was created.

According to Encyclopedia Britanica it is also called art

Introduction to Art Appreciation

historiography, historical study that deals with identifying,

classifying, describing, evaluating, interpreting, and
understanding the art products and historic development. Art
historical research has two primary concerns. The first is (1)
to discover who made a particular art object (attribution), (2)
to authenticate an art object, determining whether it was
indeed made by the artist to whom it is traditionally attributed,
(3) to determine at what stage in a culture’s development or in
an artist’s career the object in question was made, (4) to assay
the influence of one artist on succeeding ones in the historical
past, and (5) to gather biographical data on artists and
documentation (provenance) on the previous whereabouts and
ownership of particular works of art. The second primary
concern of art historical research is to understand the stylistic
and formal development of artistic traditions on a large scale
and within a broad historical perspective; this chiefly involves
the enumeration and analysis of the various artistic styles,
periods, movements, and schools of the past. (Encyclopedia
Britanica, “Art History”)

Iconography is a major part of art history. It consists in

analyzing the symbolism of works of arts (IESA, Arts and
Culture, “What is Art History”). For example a jar that is
excavated, that has artistic design in it, historians in art will
study the elements that is embedded and after analyzing the
meaning they will interpret it. All of this process will help
historians to identify the history of an art object.
