1.

Why did the Justice advice the boy to forget about his technical preparation for
the law?
I think the Justice Felix advised this to the boy because his technical preparation might hinder
him from becoming a competent lawyer. According to the letter he wrote to him, to become a
competent lawyer, one must first be a well-read person. This means they need to be
knowledgeable about many things and be educated enough to see multiple perspectives. It is
not wrong to study the technical aspects of the law, but it is also not enough to make one a
competent lawyer. One needs to be well-read first, so their mind is cultivated enough to see the
bigger picture of things and be keen in understanding of the world around them.

2. What is mean by “cultivation of imaginative faculties?

By their definitions, to cultivate means to “try to acquire or develop” and imagination is the
faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to
the senses. Therefore, “cultivation of imaginative faculties” means to develop one’s capability to
form new ideas, images, or concepts of external objects not present to one’s senses. It is the
action of acquiring a better imaginative mind. To me, this could be acquired through reading
because it’s a way to feed one’s mind new information and perspectives. Through reading, we
get introduced to both objective works; such as memories, textbooks, and encyclopedias, and
subjective works, such as literature like novels, poems, ballads, plays, and many more. In
conclusion, reading is a way to cultivate one’s imaginative faculties for it helps you develop your
capacity to create new ideas and concepts outside of your senses and helps you have a better
grasp of your inner self.

3. Although you many not be going into law school, do you think you still need to
stock you mind with the deposit of much good reading? Why or why not?
In my perspective, yes, one must still need to do large amount of reading, even though they are
not taking up law in the future. This is because reading widens one’s opportunities to grow, both
in one’s chosen field of study and as a person. By being well-read, we get to become more
knowledgeable about the things we are most passionate about. This gives us the needed
knowledge to excel in our future profession and our field of expertise. Likewise, reading helps
broaden the mind in ways that is not only mental, but also spiritual for the message and
knowledge one acquires in each page becomes a part of who they are, depending on how they
consume it.

An example of this is how it introduces you to new perspectives. By reading something foreign
from your reality, you get to become more understand to people who are foreign to you.
Likewise, you get to be exposed to multiple realities, some harsher than others, and it makes
you more sympathetic and aware. In conclusion, reading has a way to push to do take action,
may it be for yourself or for others. It has a way to change you for the better.
4. What is achieved by reading poetry, seeing great paintings, and listening to
great music?
To me, by exposing yourself to art such as poetry, great paintings, and good music, you get a
better sense of what it is to be human. Art is a manifestation of human expression, which is why
when we read, look, or listen to great art, we gain an insight, if not an understanding, of the
artists or writer. This is because art is something that appeals to our emotions; it makes us feel
things and it pushes us to think. It may be through reminiscing or self-reflection, but it helps us
have a grasp of who and what we are.

In summary, we become more in touch with our emotions and we get a better understanding of
what it is to be human. Not only that, but it makes us think beyond our reality and reflect more
on the world be live in.

5. What then is a “cultivated man” based on the letter of Justice Felix Frankfurter?

 The word “cultivated” in the dictionary means to be marked by refinement in taste and
manners. Since the letter emphasized the need to be exposed to great works and the
importance of being well-read, I believe that Justice meant that to be refined is to be
knowledgeable about many things; both intellectually and emotionally. So, by his message in the
letter, a cultivated man is someone that has acquired a large amount of knowledge through
reading and has become a refined human being. This may be done by exposing oneself to great
art, such as reading a good book, looking at a masterpiece or listening to great music. The act of
being refined means understanding the complexities of the human being and appreciating it
nonetheless.
