Repase y Escriba 45

This document contains two sections. The first section provides prompts for students to complete original sentences using a minimum of three words each. The second section discusses the uses of the verb "estar" in Spanish. It explains that estar can be followed by a preposition, adverb of place, present participle, past participle, or adjective. It provides examples of estar expressing location, forming progressive tenses with the present participle, and referring to a condition or state when combined with adjectives or past participles. The section concludes with exceptions for using ser instead of estar to express location and limitations on using the progressive form.

Uses of estar
Unlike ser, estar never links the subject with a predicate noun, pronoun, or infinitive. Estar
may be followed by a preposition, an adverb of place, a present participle (gerundio), a past
participle, or an adjective.

1 Estar expresses location, in which case it is usually followed by a preposition or an adverb.*

Cancún está en México. Cancún is in Mexico.

La ropa está en la gaveta. The clothes are in the drawer.
La playa está lejos de nuestra casa. The beach is far from our home.

2 Estar combined with the present participle (-ndo form) forms progressive tenses.**

Estuvimos ensayando todo el día. We were rehearsing the whole day.

Estás hablando más de la cuenta. You are talking too much.

3 Combined with adjectives or past participles, estar refers to a condition or state of the subject.

No pude filmar la escena, porque mi I couldn’t film the scene because my

cámara estaba rota. camera was broken.
Anita está triste y enferma. Anita is sad and sick.
A pesar de la operación, estaba peor. In spite of the operation, she was worse.

* Exception: Occasionally ser is combined with adverbs of place to refer to location. Such is the case, for instance,
of the person who gives directions to the taxi driver saying:
Es allí en la esquina. My destination is (that place) there, at the corner.
** Avoid using the progressive form with verbs implying movement: ir, venir, entrar, salir. They are in the
progressive only in very special cases. Also do not use the progressive when the English expression is equivalent to
a future: We are buying (We will buy) a new car next fall. (See Chapter 13.)
