Assignment 1 Problem

This document outlines an assignment for an incompressible fluid flow course consisting of 8 problems worth a total of 100 points. The problems involve calculating particle paths and streamlines for given velocity fields, determining torque required to rotate a disk in a viscous fluid, identifying whether given velocity fields represent incompressible flows, deriving stream functions and circulation for additional velocity fields, and more. Students are asked to perform calculations, derive expressions, and plot or comment on various fluid flow scenarios. The assignment is due on September 6th and covers topics relevant to analyzing incompressible fluid motion.

ME 5103: Incompressible Fluid Flow July – November 2021

Assignment 1
Assigned: 27th August 2021 Due: 6th September 2021 Max. marks: 100

→−
1. (20 points) A flow field is described by the velocity field V = at î + b ĵ, where a = 0.4 m/s2 and b = 2 m/s.

(a) At t = 2s, what are the coordinates of the particle that passed through the point (2, 1) at t = 0?
(b) At t = 3s, what are the coordinates of the particle that passed through the same point (2, 1) at t = 2s?
(c) Plot the streamlines for this flow for t = 1s and t = 2s
(d) Plot the pathline for the particle that passed through (2, 1) at t = 0
(e) Plot the streakline through the point (2, 1) for the time period t = 0 to t = 3s.

2. (10 points) A pair of parallel disks with radius R are used to measure the viscosity of a liquid. The upper disk
rotates with a constant angular velocity of ω at a height h above the lower disk. The viscosity of the liquid
between the disks needs to be calculated from the amount of torque required to rotate the upper disk steadily.
Obtain an algebraic expression for the torque needed to rotate the upper disk at an angular velocity of ω.

3. (10 points) Which of the following velocity fields represent a possible incompressible flow cases? Comment by
performing required calculations.

(a) u = 2x 2 + y2 − x 2 y; v = x 3 + x(y2 − 4y)

(b) u = 2y2 + 2xz; v = −2yz + 6x 2 yz; w = 3x 2 z 2 + x 3 y4

flow field represent a possible incompressible flow? Obtain the equation of the streamline that passes through
the point (r, θ) = (1, π/2).

5. (10 points) Determine the stream function for a velocity field given by V = 2y(2x + 1)î + (x 2 + x − 2y2 ) ĵ.

measured in meters. (a) Is this an incompressible flow field? (b) Derive an expression for the acceleration of a
fluid particle. (c) Calculate the velocity and acceleration vectors along x-axis and yaxis.

7. (10 points) Which of the following velocity fields represent a possible irrotational flow field? Comment by
performing required calculations.

(a) u = 2x 2 + y2 − x 2 y; v = x 3 + x(y2 − 2y)

(b) u = (x + 2y)xt; v = −(2x + y)yt

− ˆ where A = 10s−1 ,
8. (10 points) Consider the flow represented by the velocity field V = (Ay + B)î + Ax j,
B = 10m/s. Obtain an expression for the stream function for this flow. Evaluate the circulation about the closed
curve bounded by the lines y = 0, x = 1, y = 1, and x = 0.
