05-01 1 HVAC Load Calculations Mechanical - HVAC

This 3-sentence engineering verification checklist summarizes the key components that must be checked when performing HVAC load calculations for a building. It includes checking indoor and outdoor design temperatures, room dimensions and properties, internal and miscellaneous loads, psychrometric calculations for air conditioning systems, and heater calculations. Upon completion, any missing data, errors or required follow-ups should be detailed in the comments section.

Action Description
Yes No NA
1 Check the HVAC requirements for each space as follows:

a. Check the inside cooling summer design temperature dry bulb

b. Check the inside heating winter design temperature dry bulb

c. Check the inside relative humidity design percentage

d. Check the amount of outside air required to suit building pressurization, exhaust
requirements or based on number of occupants
e. Check for the ventilated spaces the number of air changes/hour required to suit a
minimum rate of change, a design space temperature or number of occupants
f. Check air flow required to a space for equipment that requires air to function properly
such as engines, compressors, cooking appliances
2 Check the outside weather air conditions as follows:

a. Check summer design air temperature dry bulb/wet bulb

b. Check winter design air temperature dry bulb/wet bulb

3 Check room surfaces:

a. Check surface area dimensions of each wall, floor and ceiling

b. Check construction for verifying U-value (overall heat transfer coefficient) of each wall,
floor and ceiling. This will include exterior surface material, internal construction including
any insulation provided and the interior surface material.
c. Check solar heat loads on the walls and roof as applicable with their compass orientation
(north/south/east/west)
d. Check window area and verify U-value based on double pane, shading, tinting, etc.

e. Check door area and verify U-value based on its construction.

4 Check the internal room loads:

a. Check the lights wattage and type (vented vs non-vented)

b. Check the people load (sensible and latent) – applies to air conditioned rooms

c. Check for any equipment load (sensible and latent) and any use factor as applicable

d. Check for during the winter season any credit to be taken from heat generating equipment
within a room.
5 Check miscellaneous system loads:

a. Check fan motor heat added to the air stream.

b. Check supply duct temperature rise – applies to air conditioned systems.

c. Check return air temperature rise – applies to air conditioned systems.

d. Check weather air infiltration into the building – applies to air conditioned systems.

e. Check weather replenishment air quantity

f. Check safety margin factor.

6 Check psychometric calculations – applies to air conditioning systems only

a. Check total sensible and latent load used in calculation

b. Check weather air and return air mix temperature

c. Check entering and leaving air temperatures (dry and wet bulb) at the cooling coil

d. Check total air flow through cooling coil

7 Check heater calculations:

a. Check air flow rate to heaters

b. Check entering and leaving air temperatures

c. Check rated capacity for each heater

d. Check rated capacity for other heaters not mounted in ducts. (Convection or unit heaters)
