INTRODUCTION

About 30 years ago, Amalean brothers in

Rathmalana, with little workforce, owned the
MAS estates (30 employees). This is South Asia's
biggest clothing business and offers more jobs for
more people. Business studies indicate that
ongoing development of products, sustainable
solutions and innovative ideas are the source of
success. Strategic partnerships with Victoria Secret, brand name and Spencer, Nike, quickness and
victory all have an impact on our success. Victoria Secret is the current firm that employs lean
manufacturing technology to achieve a competitive edge and according to the corporation is also
the primary client of MAS intimate. The major donors to MAS Intimate are VS pink and Marks &
Spencer, which contribute for the highest and second highest donations respectively. Nike
cooperates in their manufacturing requirements with both MAS intimate and MAS active. MAS
Holdings Limited mainly manufactures intimate clothing, athletic wear and swimwear. The
product range includes bonds and sculpted arms, shorts, tank heads, bodywear, sports bra, shirts,
slippers, yoga wear, lifestyle and sleepwear.

STRUCTURE OF THE COMPANY

MAS Holdings is a major provider of some of the most renowned brands in the world (EDB
2016). MAS Holdings aims to offer consumers with high-quality products in a timely way while
preserving their vigour. This organization may be split into two divisions, most of them MAS and
MAS. MAS clothing is split into three core categories: MAS Intimate, MAS Active and MAS
Fabric. The business has a total of three major sectors, MAS IT, MAS brands and MAS Fabric
stop.

4
TASK 1

Discuss the scope and functions of operations management for the chosen organization of
your choice and analyze the link between operations management and strategic planning?

Company's operational process

Understanding the assembly process is critical when discussing the operation management
concept implementation in the company. The basic operating procedure includes sewing and
associated activities. In this paper, the author examines the overall procedure of MAS holding to
fulfill client apparel needs.
The procedure starts with the submission to the distribution center of a Fabric Request Note
(FRN), including the amount of material needed. Making FRN is a hard task since you have to
refer to a huge number of records and make errors. The cutting section still utilizes hand cutting.
This procedure is laborious and full of human errors. The withering plant takes care of problems
by exceeding expectations. Also, the pressing division uses human labor to apply container stickers
on their product. This method takes a long time. When loading packages onto a vehicle, humans
work together. The author uses Porter's esteem affix research to explain MAS Holdings' concept
and development process.
➢ Inbound Logistics: During this stage, the agent is responsible for handling and collecting
data from different divisions. The supplier had to wait until the purchase request was
received before the order was started, which delayed the assembly process.
➢ The fabric producing process begins with an order for fabric requests (FRNs) being placed
in the stockroom, which specifies all required materials in their respective amounts.
Making FRN is difficult since you must consult a large number of sources while also
making errors.
➢ Outbound logistics refers to the physical handling of the customer's transportation needs
by the organization.. It takes time to do research and find the necessary information.
➢ Sales Promotion: The company uses coordinated sales promotion to sell their goods.
➢ After-sales service is provided by the entity in responsibility of product quality.

5
➢ Solid Infrastructure: The company builds up its workplace using well-defined ideas and
plans.
➢ Technical Development: The business employs leading edge technology and innovation to
entice consumers with innovative goods.
➢ Acquisition: The MAS Holdings client examines the texture suppliers as they need a high-
quality goods.

Value of efficient operations Management and Organizational Goals

An operation manager oversees the process of producing goods or providing services to

meet consumer demands. The organization's mission statement defines its overarching strategy,
and Operations are linked to accomplish the goals. It includes planning, organizing, directing, and
coordinating all production resources. The operational plan should be part of the overall
organizational strategy, and other functional divisions should create strategies for their own units.
MAS Active's mission statement is (mission statement), thus operations should be
developed and organized to accomplish this. To guarantee high quality goods, operations should
use quality control systems. Profit maximization is accomplished by reducing needless inventory
costs and managing transportation and logistics efficiently. Coordination is critical in the clothing
business to provide completed products on schedule, in quality, and in quantity.\
The organization's goal is to provide Apparel as specified by the customer. Due to shifting
fashion dynamics, the order should arrive on time. If one component of the process is delayed, the
shipping will be delayed and the fashion will be discontinued, with the maker bearing the loss.
Thus, coordination between departments and support services is critical. Achieving organizational
goals requires effective operation management. Operation management requires monitoring and
evaluating many activities at the same time.
For example, in MAS, the merchandising staff must communicate with the customer to
acquire product details. Color, fabric density, pattern, etc. These details must be transmitted to
other departments such as design, fabric shop, sample department, etc. to meet the buyer's deadline.
Once the customer confirms, the sample is made. The operational manager must verify the
manufacturing facility has enough raw materials, equipment, skilled labor, etc., and prepare for
any exceptions. More quality control methods should be used to guarantee high quality is exported

6
to the customer. This is a complicated procedure that needs high-level communication and
cooperation. A delay in one component of the process affects the whole production.
Successful management of operations in achieving strategic management objectives

Because of its dedication to quality and delivery on time, MAS Active has become a
successful producer with safe orders each month. MAS Active has achieved this accomplishment
over many years of research and tests, but continues to enhance its systems and processes. MAS
Active tracks the process of order production because the production starts when the purchaser
makes the order. Operating managers should guarantee that capacity and resources are efficiently
and effectively used to satisfy buyer demand. Since idle manufacturing lines, waste of raw
materials, delivery delays and financial losses for the company will occur.

Lean Manufacturing
Through learning about Toyota's lean production system, MAS was launched as "MAS
operating system," popularly referred to as MOS in 2004. The primary aim of MOS is to develop
and execute a sustainable method of reducing waste while enhancing profitability, improving the
quality of the final product and improving continuously. Operational management tools are also
generated through MOS. Some of the lean techniques used by MAS Active
➢ 5 s – This comes from Japan, which contains five ways for organizing the workplace. This
idea is not only applied in the factory floor, but throughout the whole company
➢ Kaizan- This term comes in Japan, which defines continual improvement in a process. In
each area, there are committees that identify Kaizan in their respective process and
connected to their KPI and
➢ 7 waste. In a manufacturing sector there are 7 trash. The operational management team has
taken the required measures to reduce waste by analyzing various kinds of waste.

7
Ansoff Matrix of MAS Holdings

Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility in the Apparel Industry has been effective for
MAS Holdings, thanks to strategic growth decisions and activities taken across the world..
Depending on internal and external organizational variables, these development choices and routes
have changed for various locations and historical periods. However, the strategic corporate social
responsibility of MAS Holdings in the apparel industry has consistently used the Ansoff matrix to
create a global beverage powerhouse, which can be seen from the development of a global
beverage powerhouse. MAS Holdings has successfully used the Ansoff grid and categories in its
strategic corporate social responsibility for the apparel industry.

8
Market penetration
The market penetration strategy is used by companies that want to expand their existing
product lines into new markets in which their brands are already well-established and already
operating.
➢ Increased production capacity
➢ Increased marketing investment
➢ Improved distribution
➢ Concurring price
➢ New advantages and features of the product

Market development
MAS Holdings' strategic corporate social responsibility in the clothing industry may
increase its company development via the introduction of current products into new markets. This
is achievable via several ways for the strategic corporate social responsibility of MAS Holdings in
the apparel industry, described below.
➢ Regional development
➢ International Development
➢ New categories of customers
➢ Brand Sensitivity
➢ Research and development
Product development
Product development is the process through which a company attempts to enhance its
growth by introducing new products into existing markets. Many activities underlie the strategic
social responsibility of MAS Holdings in the clothing sector, including product development and
innovation.
➢ Modification of current goods
➢ The launch of new products
➢ R&D
➢ Strategic Partnerships
➢ Product quality

9
Diversification
When a company diversifies, it refers to the growth and development of its new product in
new markets. Diversification is essential for companies like MAS Holding to stay competent,
creative and competitive in the apparel industry — and therefore relevant to consumer markets.
➢ Vertical diversification
➢ Diversification horizontal.
➢ Diversification into a new company
➢ Fusions and purchases

TASK 2

Critically evaluate the current forecasting method used by the organization and identify gaps
in the current method used. Make recommendations as to how the company would improve
the overall operational efficiency and improve productivity?

Despite commercial software's sophisticated techniques, they are seldom utilized in the
textile-apparel sector. That's not the only reason. Implementing such solutions on large and
specialized databases may be extremely time consuming. Also, and maybe most importantly,
practitioners want to manage their predictions. In spite of its accuracy, no business will allow a
program predict sales. In reality, software-generated predictions are often utilized as a starting
point for practitioners' final projections. These practitioner-tested customized solutions usually
provide adequate accuracy. Each firm uses its own methods to make the best prediction. This is
usually a baseline prediction, either from a specific program or more simply sales from previous
year. The practitioner then reworks this baseline based on explanatory factors. For example, the
practitioner modifies the curves based on price decrease times and market information. The
outcome may be extremely accurate due to the seasonality and influence of major explanatory
factors. But this approach has many flaws:
➢ The number of variables examined is restricted to avoid complicated and imprecise
analysis.
➢ If the number of objects is big,
➢ The outcomes vary depending on the operator's expertise.

10
Key Performance Indicators

Key performance indicators may help apparel businesses discover business problems. A
company's success is measured by quantitative metrics. KPIs are used by healthy apparel
businesses in several business aspects.

Strength
Mas Apparel's skills and resources allow it to maintain a competitive edge in the
marketplace. All of the positive aspects of strengths are based on human resources, financial
resources (including past experiences and accomplishments), activities and processes, and
physical resources (such as land and buildings).
➢ Mas Apparel's Strong Domestic Market - Mas Apparel's domestic market is both
a strength and a hindrance to development and innovation. The case study data MAS
Holdings: Apparel Industry Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility was used to create
this section. Mas Apparel management is tempted to focus solely on the local market.
➢ No. of Segments: Mas Apparel enjoys the first mover advantage. New markets,
social responsibility, strategy and supply chain have all been tested. Mas Apparel has
developed a unique approach to access un-catered markets using Leadership & Managing
People solutions.
➢ High Margins : Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility in the Apparel Industry
case report that Mas Apparel has not only been able to meet competitive difficulties but
also to engage in research and development.
➢ The existing customers of MAS Apparel are extremely loyal and may help the
business to increase its futures market share. In line with MAS Holdings' study: Strategic
Corporate Social Responsibility in the Apparatus Industry, Mas Apparel is capable of
competing with other global companies on the worldwide market.
➢ IP Rights – Mas Apparel has acquired many patents and copyrights via invention
and purchase from artists. This may help Mas Apparel defeat rivals in different sectors.
Emerging markets, Supply chain, Social responsibility

11
➢ Great relationships with current suppliers — Over the years, MAS Apparel has
established good working relationships with its suppliers and other supply chain partners.
The company may expand its product and service offerings to consumers by leveraging
the expertise of its suppliers and supply chain partners.

Weakness
Mas Apparel has weaknesses in some areas, talents, or skills. It hinders the firm's capacity
to maintain a competitive edge. Human resources, financial resources, physical resources such
as land and buildings, activities and processes, as well as past experiences and accomplishments,
are all instances of shortcomings that may be identified.
➢ Technology Integration in Operations – Mas Apparel has integrated technology
in backend processes, but not in front end processes.
➢ Workforce diversity – I think Mas Apparel's workforce is too homogeneous,
considering its recent domestic market expansion.
➢ The Organizational culture of Mas Apparel is seemingly still driven by divisional
turf wars, leading managers to keep information concealed. The case study on Strategic
Corporate Social Responsibility in Apparel Industry shows that silos of knowledge may
lead to company losses.
➢ It is possible to duplicate and replicate the Mas Apparel business model despite
the fact that the firm owns patents and copyrights. When it comes to the business in
which Mas Apparel operates, intellectual property rights may be difficult to enforce.
➢ There appears to be a lack of key knowledge from MAS Apparel in some areas,
particularly those related to technology and digital transformation. In view of the current
advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning Mas Apparel is trying to
reorganize its operations.
➢ The MAS Holding Enquiry: Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility in the Apparel
Industry concluded that Mas Apparel did not manage inventories and/or cash flow
effectively.

12
TASK 3

Critically assess quality management practices used by organization and benchmark leading
practices in the industry by making recommendations for improvement. Explain the
complexities that can occur between cost minimization and quality maximization in your
organization?

Quality management is comparable to the core of a company's production process in terms

of importance. Because MAS is a 100 percent export company, all of its goods must match the
specifications of the customer, from the fabric to the thread, the hem, the stitches, the packaging,
and so on. In MAS, active quality inspection is performed at the moment textiles are received in
the warehouse and again at each output before the fabric is fed into the next process. MAS Active
has made substantial investments in order to reduce the number of quality problems. Profitability
has also been identified as a goal by MAS. The active quality of the goods is critical in maintaining
customer relationships and obtaining new orders. Quality management also has the added benefit
of controlling the costs associated with poor quality. It is the primary goal of quality management
to guarantee customer happiness, which is directly related to the organization's overall goal.
The responsibility for maintaining a better level of quality in all outputs rests with the top
management. As a result, quality goals are established in alignment with organizational objectives,
and frequent reporting on quality as well as attendance at quality meetings are required. The
company as a whole feels confidence in its goods and services because of quality assurance.
The following are some of the advantages that may be derived through Quality Management.
➢ Maintain a high level of consistency in the product's quality. This may be
accomplished by conducting a critical evaluation of quality problems and implementing
remedial measures to enhance the product's quality.
➢ Increase client happiness, which will result in the business receiving more orders
in the future and increasing profitability.
➢ Increased access to new markets as a result of the industry's reputation for high-
quality goods, which helps to avoid trade barriers in the global market.

13
➢ Quality assurance and continuous process improvement will help to keep the cost
of production under control by reducing the amount of rework.
➢ The effectiveness of current Quality Management procedures in achieving the
strategic management goals of the business
➢ As previously stated, MAS Active has made significant investments in the Quality
Management Process, and via the MAS Operating System (MOS), numerous quality
control instruments are used in the course of daily operations.

In addition to the above, MAS Active incorporates Six Sigma tools into its production
process. It is the primary goal of MAS Actives to achieve zero defect product production via this
method. Any manufacturing process must adhere to the Six Sigma quality standard, which is 3.4
faults per million units produced. A six-sigma organization helps to enhance its process and,
therefore, significantly improves the bottom line via different analyses and computations. The
company MAS Active has implemented six-sigma processes in all of its sub-divisions, from the
initial design through the finished product. That is, the process runs from the merchandising
department to the packaging department, and it is comparable to other quality tools in that it is a
continuous process. If Six Sigma MAS Active was able to accomplish the following results within
two years of its deployment, it would be considered a success.
➢ Productivity per manufacturing line has increased by 20% as a result of the improvements.
➢ A higher level of quality. Compared to the previous year, rework was decreased by 8
percent, down from 12 percent.
➢ A 20 percent reduction in operating costs was achieved.
➢ Increased levels of consumer satisfaction

14
TASK 4

Identify three contemporary trends in operations management and discuss as to how these
trends can transform the operations function in your chosen organization? Elaborate with
examples.

More than ever, especially in the wake of COVID-19, company managers are dependent
on leading their businesses through the recovery process and helping them to operate more
effectively. They will be essential to how companies behave themselves — here, there and
everywhere, now and in the future. Knowing the most important trends as the world enters a new
century may help you to achieve your business management objectives for the following year.

Operational Management: Communication Across the Organization

Communication will be more essential than ever for companies in 2021. In the future,
"flatter" forms will be substituted for organizational hierarchical structures. The theory is that
flatter organizational hierarchies facilitate information flows without perpetuating dated models
that only serve high-level management while alienating and denominating entire departments
within certain organizations, including frontline employees who make up 80 per cent of the global
workforce. "Efficiency and productivity in any enterprise are pushed at the core of the business by
efficient operational communication. A content marketing executive at Gigworker, “It technically
combines strategy alignment with real-world problem-solving to produce excellent results.”
Effective communication not only enhances the effectiveness of a company's operations, but it
also has an influence on how its workers view the business, which, in turn, increases employee
satisfaction and retention.

Become More Active

The phrase "mobile communications" is obsolete in recent years. It is difficult to imagine
a future where smart gadgets are not all favorites from home shopping to vacation bookings and
employment applications. As a result, your frontline employees expect the communication strategy
of your company to reflect their current degree of accessibility, usability and usefulness. The
absence of operational mobility and internal communications of your business may exclude key

15
people, such as front-line workers. Mobile accessibility will be essential in operations management
for the year 2021, according to the International Business Times.

First and first, safety must be prioritized.

The maintenance of workers and the safety of the public is a key concern for operational
managers because businesses handle the repercussions of COVID-19. Many businesses report a
rise in health and safety problems every quarter, primarily owing to the lack of access to essential
information among workers. In addition, companies may have difficulty identifying and
documenting problems and events linked to safety. Operations managers will have to go outside
the box to minimize health and accidents at work. So businesses need to understand new rules on
safety and compliance and operations managers need to change internal processes and procedures
rapidly so that they are compliant.

Increase the quality of the employee experience.

A more staff-centered culture that emphasizes personal and professional growth will
continue until 2021. The basic premise is that the time and funds spent are worth a happy
workforce, since happiness increase retention and productivity. Employees who are pleased with
their employment often believe that their work benefits their lives in ways other than money. For
individuals in charge of industrial operations management, this means ensuring clear and
accessible internal communication. Provide contemporary employees with tools to self-assess their
own performance while also providing immediate feedback.

Have a firm grasp on the demand.

As a result of COVID-19, there have been significant changes in consumer behaviour,
leading to serious problems for the whole supply chain. Several brick and mortar store companies
have started changing their business digitally, with an already astounding 49% rise in online sales
by April 2020. Consumer demand changes at such a fast rate that operations managers will need
to improve and develop supply networks that are responsive to client demand in the future.

16
The Customer Service Department Is Always Correct
Operations managers will have to grasp the variables influencing purchasing choices in
2021 and adjust their businesses appropriately. The function of an operations manager and the
whole operational management team develops beyond cost reduction. Operations are becoming
more complex and are linked to global performance goals like product quality, delivery timeliness
and customer service. Operations managers will engage closely with customer service teams in
2021 to understand their consumers better. In today's corporate climate, it is not surprising that
operations managers will continue to explore methods to improve the process. In the next months,
as the globe starts to recover from the effects of the epidemic, it is essential that these consumer
connections be maintained and strengthened. The economic losses of COVID-19 will not sever
the ties of human compassion and empathy.
