Past Continuous

Positive Form

S + To be + V-ing + O

To be: was & were


Was =
Were =

Present Participle (V-ing)


 Watch – Watching
 Make – Making
 Search – Searching
 Read – Reading

Functions:

 To tell a continuing action or state that was happening at some point in the past (aksi
yang terjadi selama momen tertentu pada masa lampau).
 To describe something that was happening continuously in the past when another action
interrupted it (sesuatu yang terjadi pada masa lampau dibarengi dengan aksi singkat yang
tiba-tiba terjadi).
 To inform a habitual action in the past (kebiasaan pada masa lampau).

Examples:
1. Continuing action in the past
 I was having dinner at this time yesterday. 
 They were making a toast at this time last night.
 I was doing physically exercises all day yesterday.
 In July, she was working as a waitress in a well-known restaurant. 
2. Something that was happening continuously in the past when another action
interrupted it
Subordinate conjunction while & when 
simple past tense + while + past continuous tense
past continuous tense + when + simple past tense

 The door was knocked while I was reading a book.


 My mother was cleaning the carpet when I got home.
 She was sleeping when you called her.

3. Habitual action in the past


 I was repeatedly checking things. 
 The girl was always yelling out loud.
 My neighbor was always chasing stray cats off with his broom
(Adverb of frequency: always, often, usually, sometimes, etc)

Adverb of time:
 Yesterday (kemarin)
 Two days ago (dua hari yang lalu)
 Last week (minggu lalu)
 Last month (bulan lalu)
 Three years ago (tiga tahun yang lalu)
 Last weekend (liburan yang lalu)
 Last night (kemarin malam)
 Just now (tadi)
 This morning (pagi ini)
 In July (di bulan Juli)
Negative Form

S + To be + not + V-ing + O

Examples:
1. She was not washing clothes last night.
2. They were not playing hockey yesterday.
3. Karen and Jemimah were not having their breakfast this morning.
4. They were not studying when Mr. Mortin came to their house.
5. My mom was not cooking when my sister fell down.

Interrogative Form

To be (was/were) + S + V-ing + O

Examples:
1. Was I reading article?
2. Was she working in a factory?
3. Was it raining yesterday?
4. Were you waiting for him yesterday?

5W + 1H (What When Who Where Why How)

5W1H + To be + S + V-ing

Examples:
1. Where was he taking his exam last year?
2. What was she washing?
