Educ 1 Module 3

The document discusses three key issues in human development: nature vs nurture, continuity vs discontinuity, and stability vs change. It defines each concept and provides examples to illustrate them. Nature refers to genetic influences, while nurture refers to environmental factors. Continuity suggests gradual development, while discontinuity involves abrupt stages. Stability is about consistent personality traits, while change is about traits being modified over time.

Module 3:

ISSUES ON
HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT

By:
Jonnalyn A. Alisbo
Macmod G. Ali
Objectives:

1. To understand the issues on

human development.
2. Can analyze what are the
causes of behavior of a human.
Introduction:

The interaction of heredity and

environment is so extensive that
to ask which is more important,
nature or nurture is like asking
which is more important to a
rectangle, height or width.

- William Greenough
Issues on Human Development

1. Nature vs. Nurture

2. Continuity vs. Discontinuity
3. Stability vs. Change
Nature
vs.
Nurture
5
Nature
Refers to all the genes and
hereditary factors that influence
who we are from our physical
appearance to our personality
characteristics.

Behavior is caused by innate

characteristics. Inherited genes
provides the blueprint for all
behavior. 6
Nurture
Refers to all environment
variables that impact who we are.
Including our early childhood
experiences, how we raised, social
relationship and our surrounding
culture.

Behavior is shaped by interactions

with the environment. Born
empty vessel. Quality depends on 7
external influences.
Continuity
vs.
Discontinuity
8
Continuity
The idea that human
development is a gradual and
continues process in which
individuals build upon previously
acquired knowledge and skills.

Question:
Is our development like that of a
seedling gradually growing into
an acacia tree?
9
Discontinuity
The idea that human
development is a discontinuous
process, involving a series of
separate stages n which new
knowledge and behaviors emerge
abruptly.

Question:

Is our development like a

caterpillar into a butterfly. 10
Stability
vs.
Change
11
Stability
Deals with the issue with the
personality traits during infancy
endure throughout the lifespan,
more likely the state or qualities
that may not easily change.

Example: Introvert

12
Change
Are these naturally personalities
will remain until the rest of their
life? Or would be modified
eventually by interactions with
family, experiences at school, and
acculturation.

Example: Introvert to Extrovert
