Course: GEC 8 (The Contemporary World)

Topic: Introduction to Globalization

I. Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, you are expected to be able to:
1. Determine and define globalization and the factors under this concept;
2. Analyze and evaluate the factors affecting globalization and the significant changes
it provides; and
3. Evaluate the misconceptions on globalization

II. Learning Activities and Resources

To start the course on The Contemporary World, it is necessary to understand how well
you are connected globally by making an inventory of the origin of the things most
precious to you, like your computers, gadgets, clothes, and favorite food. (Refer to Activity
1, Inventory of My Global Things at the Assignment Page)

Now that you have an idea of the extent of globalization in your life, watch Globalization
Theories presented by Sydney Brown for Khan Academy and understand the definition
and views in explaining globalization. ( Use link Globalization theories | Society and
Culture | MCAT | Khan Academy - YouTube). There are a lot more videos posted on
YouTube which you may watch.

I recommend that you read Unit 1, Understanding Globalization of A Course Module for
The Contemporary World by Botor et al., from pages 1 to 21, to understand the different
concepts and misconceptions on globalization.

Synchronous sessions will be held according to your designated class schedules. The class
will be sharing ideas and queries that they have met while doing their activities, reading,
and video watching. (Refer to the Announcement Page for the schedule of your
synchronous session.)

III. Introduction:
Welcome to The Contemporary World! I am excited to have you in class and am looking
forward to having a fruitful semester with you.

To begin, I recommend that you take a few minutes to explore the course as shown in the
syllabus. (Refer to Syllabus Page) It already presents to you the topics, delivery mode, and
references for each schedule/week. By doing this, you would already have an idea of how
our semester would be going. In addition, class rules and policies are also posted to guide

us in our learning. Should you have questions, you can send me a message to the canvas
inbox or reserve them during our synchronous session.

The course The Contemporary World is all about the multifaceted globalization
characterized by the rapid advancements in science and technology and the
interconnectedness of the world's different communities. By going beyond your
boundaries, you will be meeting different cultures, which would sometimes contradict the
very foundation of your principles. What then should you do when the people you meet
are against your culture?

May you be inspired by watching the video of Thai Life Insurance on respecting others
(Use YouTube link: Respect each other - YouTube). A part of the narration says:

"What does he get in return for doing every day?"

"He gets nothing.
He won't get richer.
Won't appear on tv.
Still anonymous.
And not a bit famous.
What he does receive are emotions.
He witnesses happiness
Reaches a deeper understanding.
Feels the love.
Receives what money can't buy.
A world made more beautiful."

IV. Body:
Globalization has had numerous definitions and is a highly contested concept.
Economists view it as the process of integration of world economies. As such,
globalization has brought a positive impact on trade and commerce. Some see
globalization as a process where time and space were gradually compressed because of
developments in technology and the resulting changes in man's political, cultural, and
economic aspects. In contrast, some see globalization as a social condition where
political and economic borders have become irrelevant because of the global economic,
political, and cultural interconnections (Steger, 2008).

Scholte (2008), on the other hand, clarified the misconceptions about globalization.
According to him, globalization is a) not internationalization because the later requires
reference to national boards; b) not liberalism where economic barriers and restrictions
are removed, and c) not universalization and westernization of cultures

V. Life Applications
With the covid-19 pandemic, one health protocol imposed is social distancing, which
eventually led people to impose imaginary barriers of around one meter from other
people. The free movement of people from one nation to another has also accelerated

the spread of the virus that governments were forced to shut their gates. Watch Will the
coronavirus crisis reshape globalisation and the economic system? | COVID-19 Special -
YouTube and let us try to analyze the effect of coronavirus on globalization. (Refer to
Activity 2, Coronavirus and Globalization on Assignment Page)
VI. Summary and Conclusion
Globalization is a term of numerous definitions. Nonetheless, it primarily refers to the
interconnectedness of people around the globe in different aspects like economy,
politics, culture, and ecology.
