It is also important for you to know that these genres have a specific purpose
and target audience.

Purpose is the reason why a viewing material is created. To know the

purpose of the writer or the director, ask yourself these questions:
1. Why is the writer/director telling or showing me this?
2. What does the writer/director want me to know or do after viewing this?

There are three main categories for purpose.

1. Persuade – This is to convince the viewers to agree with an idea or
argument.
2. Inform – It focuses on facts. There is no bias in this type of viewing
material.
3. Entertain – It aims to amuse or catch the interest of viewers.

6
Audience is the intended viewers of the material. Audience can be classified
in different ways. Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB)
uses the following:
1. Viewers of all ages – A material is appropriate for all audiences. It is also
known as the Rated G.
2. Viewers 13 years old and above with supervising adult – A material may
have contents that are not suitable for that said age which require the
presence of parents or adults. It is known as Rated PG.
3. Viewers 13 years old and above – it is known as the Rated R-13.
4. Viewers 16 years old and above – it is known as the Rated R-16.
5. Viewers 18 years old and above – it is known as the Rated R-18.

Note:
Remember that these genres and sub-genres can be
combined or found in a single program, especially in films.
Therefore, find the viewing material’s central characteristic and
use it as a basis in determining its possible genres.

topic. Now that you have learned the different genres, purpose,
intended audience, and features of various viewed texts, let us
