Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use
of words in a structured and conventional way. We choose the words we use in expressing our
thoughts and feelings, these chosen words are also the exact reflection of who we are and what
we can do.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and
independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of
the learning resource while being an active learner. Please remember not to make any

What I Need to Know
In the previous lessons, you have learned the parts of a sentence. This time we
will explore more of the parts of speech, specifically, the one that names everything—
Noun.
Nouns form a large proportion of English vocabulary and they come in a wide
variety of types. It can name a person, animals, things, although sometimes they might
be intangible things, such as concepts, activities, or processes. Some might even be
hypothetical or imaginary things.

Noun and its Purposes

Noun acts as the subject of a sentence that performs the action of the verb. The
subject has to be a noun. It cannot be a verb, an adverb, an adjective or any other part
of speech. Nouns are basic to sentence structure because they, along with pronouns,
provide the subject of the sentence. In addition, a noun functions as a direct object of a
verb, an indirect object of a verb, object of a preposition, or a complement.

Write the word TRUE if the statement states something true about nouns,

1. Noun is a part of speech that names person, place, things and even
events.
2. It is the only part of speech that can be used as a subject.
3. It has essential functions such as a direct object of the verb.
4. It is the antecedent of a pronoun.
5. It is a basic to sentence structure.

You may have noticed that nouns may be placed differently in the given
sentences. The function of the noun changes when its position changes in the
sentence.

What is It
Functions of Nouns
Noun as subject
The subject (in bold) can be a person, place, thing or idea. It performs an act or shows a
state of being as expressed by the verb. The subject is easily recognized as it usually
comes at the beginning of a sentence and is followed by a verb.
examples
1. The man stepped on my toes.
2. Sam accidentally hits her head on the bookshelf.
The direct object (in bold) is a noun in a sentence. The object is acted upon by the subject,
and It typically comes after the verb.
examples
1. Tom bit his nail.
2. I am painting the doghouse
An indirect object represents a person or thing that receives the effect of the action of the
verb. It usually comes between the verb and the direct object.
examples
1. He fed the monkeys bananas.
2. She poured drinks for the boys.
The object of preposition (in bold) is a noun in a sentence. The object comes after the
preposition as shown here in following examples.

2. Two puppies followed behind the girl. (Preposition: behind)
