Cavite Munity

The document summarizes two sides of the 1872 Cavite Mutiny and execution of the GOMBURZA priests in the Philippines. One side, documented by a Spanish historian, states that the mutiny was a plot by Filipinos to overthrow Spanish rule and install the three priests as new kings. The other side involved separate accounts of the incident that not all Filipinos were aware of. The execution of the priests was a major factor in the rise of Filipino nationalism.

Introduction of Controversy:

In 1872, two major incidents occurred: the 1872 Cavite Mutiny and the martyrdom of the three martyr
priests, Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora (GOMBURZA). However, not everyone
was aware that separate accounts of the same incident existed. Since this incident led to another tragic
but significant part of our history—the execution of GOMBURZA, which was a major factor in the
awakening of nationalism among Filipinos—all Filipinos should be aware of both sides of the story.

Sides/or Evidences of the Controversy:

The event was documented by Jose Montero Y Vidal, a well-known Spanish Historian. He stated that the
Filipino wanted to overthrow the Spanish Government to install new Kings in the likes of the three
priests Fr. Mariano Gomez, Fr. Jose Burgos, and Fr. Jacinto Zamora (GOMBURZA).

Manila and Cavite conspirators plotted to assassinate high-ranking Spanish officers, followed by a
massacre of the friars. The launching of rockets from the walls of Intramuros was allegedly a pre-
planned warning among the conspirators of Manila and Cavite.
