How are ecosystems and biodiversity affected by invasive species?

The invasive species destroys the ecosystem by competing with the native species and
destroying the existing food web in the ecosystem. Introduction of invasive species may also
result to habitat modification. For example, introduction of non-native plants to an ecosystem
that does not have the right limiting factors to control its growth and population may result to
its domination over the native plant species. Hybridization may also occur leading to loss of
genetic diversity. This happens when closely related native and invasive species are introduced
with each other, threatening the population of the endemic and native species in the wild.

What major problems do these invasive species pose?

Invasive species threatens the population of the native and endemic species in the wild, which
may eventually lead to its extinction. Loss of habitat is also a major problem that they pose.
Invasive plant species are notoriously known for killing habitats, they modify it by over growing
the native species and destroying forests. They also pose health hazards; some species may be
carriers of flu-like illness and cause disease outbreaks. What are some possible solutions to this
problem?Laws have been passed to combat the spread of invasive species. Laws such as
restriction of exotic pet trade and strict laws on import and export of animals. Establishment of
special programs that exclusively focuses on management of invasive species and its
elimination. Here in the Philippines, promotion of market for invasive Chinese turtles and
encourage the townsfolk to hunt them. However, this solution is proven to be not enough
because the population of these soft-shelled turtle has not decreased. It has only controlled its
population but have not eradicated the species. What are the roles of humans in this dynamic?
Most of the time invasive species are introduced by humans to the wild. Humans are the cause
due to lack of proper education which has led to problems incurred by the invasive species. If
only all of us are well educated, then there would be little to no species considered as “invasive”
today. If there are invasive species, then they would have been introduced through natural
factors such as storms, ocean currents, and climate shifts. This will result to a significantly less
population of invasive species because introduction due to natural factors rarely happens.
What are invasive species?
Invasive species are species non-native to the ecosystem and disrupts it. Introduction of these
species results to the native species’ loss of habitat and eventually their decrease of population.
It may also cause health diseases and cause harm to human
