The Respiratory System
The respiratory system consists of nose, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The primary
function of the respiratory system is to furnish oxygen for use by individual tissue cells and to
take away their gaseous waste product, carbon dioxide. This process is accomplished through
the act of respiration. Respiration consists of external and internal process. External
respiration is the process whereby the lungs and the blood within capillaries of alveoli.
Internal respiration is the process whereby oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between
the blood in tissue capillaries and the cells of the body.
The Nose
The nose is the projection in the center of the face and consists of an external and internal

passages; the superior, middle, and inferior meaty. These passages lead to the pharynx, are
connected by opening with the paranasal sinuses, with the ears by the Eustachian tube, and
with the region of the eyes by the nasolacrimal ducts.

defect may be corrected by surgery. The nose as well as the rest of the respiratory system, is

There are 20 primary teeth, ten in the upper jaw and ten in the lower jaw. They enter the
mouth, or erupt, at different dates but usually during the period from age 6 months to 21/2
years. There is, as with the permanent dentition, a marked variation between people and
between people of different countries. As with the permanent teeth, there are different types-
not all the primary teeth are the same. The primary teeth differ from the permanent teeth
because they are smaller, often whither and the molar have roots that are spaced wide apart.
The incisors (primary). Although much smaller than the permanent ones that replace them, the
4 primary incisors in each jaw are almost the same shapes. The canines (primary), there are 2
canines teeth in each jaw. Again, the canines are very similar to the permanent ones that
replace them. Molar (primary), there are no primary premolar teeth, instead, they are called
molars. This is confusing, but look at the figures again. See how much more like molars the
last two teeth on each side of each jaw are. There are four in each jaw. They are replaced by
the permanent premolars and later on the permanent molars erupt behind them further back in
the mouth as the jaw grow in size to allow this. Like the permanent molars, the primary
molars in the upper jaw three roots and in the lower jaw to roots.
