The Rolldown technique is an economical method for rehabilitating pipelines between 500-1200mm diameters over long distances. It involves inserting a standard PE pipe into the existing pipeline and using a machine to reduce its diameter by up to 10% for insertion. Once inside, the liner is expanded back to its original diameter through pressurization to tightly fit the host pipe wall. This results in a pipeline with new condition and quality while not loading the original pipe.

Rehabilitation
Pipeline conduit relining in the Rolldown technique
is an economic solution for inner city areas and for
longer distances to be rehabilitated. In the range of
between DN 1200 and DN 500, lengths of up to
1000 m do not present a problem.

T H E T ECH N IQ U E

The liner consists of standard PE pipes which are


joined by butt-welding on site. To make the inser-
tion into the host line possible, the cross section of
the liner is reduced in the Rolldown machine.
Thanks to its rollers arranged in pairs it is possible to
reduce the diameter by up to 10 %. The speed of
deformation is between one and three meters per
minute.

When the liner has been pulled into the host line,
the ends are sealed and the liner is subjected to
water pressure. By this method the liner expands
again to its original diameter and fits tightly to the
internal host pipe wall.

The result is a pipeline of new-like quality. The static


condition of the liner does not subject the old pipe-
line to any load. The PE material guarantees excel-
lent hydraulic properties and a high corrosion resis-
tance.
