Teacher: Aimae Hermosilla Grade Level: G8

Subject Area: Mathematics Subject Math 8

Start Date: 9/9/2020 End Date: 9/10/2020

Topic: Rational Algebraic Expressions

PVMGO (Philosophy, Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives): (specific parts of the PVMGO which
is incorporated in the lesson) See Codes

PC2 Critical Thinking, M1 Independence, M2 Self-confidence, M3 Faith, G5 Values

STANDARD AND COMPETENCY: Which standards and competencies are aligned with the lesson and can be
integrated to deepen learning?

● M8 CS1 LDUO key concepts of factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear
equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in two
variables and linear functions.
● M8 PS1 TLBAT formulate real-life problems involving factors of polynomials, rational algebraic
expressions, linear equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of linear equations and
inequalities in two variables and linear functions, and solve these problems accurately using a
variety of strategies.

OBJECTIVES: (specific, skill-oriented and measurable goals which you want your students to be able to accomplish
after the lesson is completed). – begin with an end in mind. What is the purpose of this lesson? In the end SWBAT...

1. LCPS1-M8-Ia-3 illustrates rational algebraic expressions.

2. LCPS1-M8-Ia-4 simplifies rational algebraic expressions.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES: Which texts will be used? Are those texts available in multiple modes? Do the
texts include a range of print and digital text in diverse media? Insert hyperlinks or URL or titles of books, articles, and
other materials here.

DO-NOW: What is it that students need to know and be able to do prior to this lesson? How will you determine what
students know and can do in preparation for this unit?
Letter
The teacher will ask the students to write letters to their parents explaining everything they know
about rational expressions and why they matter. Their letters should be organized, thoughtful, and
methodological, and they should use examples to illustrate the points students are making about
mathematical content. Then, in the next meeting the teacher will choose 3 students to share how
their parents reacted!

MINI-LESSON: (teacher teaches particular skills, extend previous learning, create interest in a topic and generate
questions, or introduce strategies) – use a specific strategy. How does technology support teaching and learning?

An algebraic expression where both the numerator and the denominator are
polynomials .
x+3
Example :
x
is called a rational expression. Since the denominator can't be zero
there are values of x which are excluded from the rational expression. The
expression above has an excluded value of zero.
To simplify a rational expression you have to eliminate all factors that are
common of the numerator and the denominator. To accomplish this use the
greatest common factor (GCF) of the factors
15 3∙5 5
Example: = =
27 3∙ 3 ∙3 9

GUIDED PRACTICE: Students will demonstrate that they have grasped the concepts and the skills by providing the
students opportunities to be flexible, make choices, take initiative, interact with others, be accountable, and be a
leader.

4 xy
Simply the expression:
6 y2
Sol’n :
4 xy 2 y ∙2 x x
2= =
6 y 2 y ∙3 y 3 y

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Provide students with opportunities for application of skills, student-directed inquiry,
analysis, evaluation, and/or reflection? Ensure that they can connect this lesson with previous lessons or other disciplines.
Students will reinforce skills and synthesize their new knowledge on their own and away from the teacher's guidance ).

x+5
2.

ASSESSMENT: How will you assess your students to elicit direct, observable evidence in order to monitor and/or
measure student learning and inform instruction? In what ways do students have multiple options to demonstrate their
learning?

Simplify each expression.

3.

FEEDBACK: What open-ended, grade-level appropriate questions will prompt exploration, innovation, and critical
thinking about the big ideas?

The teacher will ask the following questions:

How does expression affect you in real life ?
