Assignment: Module 4. Hypothesis Testing Tools

1. A copier machine operator monitored the daily number of copies produced over 30 days, which averaged 5105 copies with a standard deviation of 75. Using a hypothesis test at a 0.05 significance level, the results show the average is greater than the claimed average of 5000 copies. The recommendation is to increase supply levels to avoid understocking. 2. A survey of 50 college students found they averaged 28 hours per week on Facebook, compared to a previous reported average of 30 hours. A hypothesis test at a 0.01 significance level on the new data shows the average is lower than 30 hours. The recommendation is to advise students to limit their time on Facebook to reduce screen exposure impacts on health.

Assignment: Module 4. Hypothesis testing tools

1. A copier machine operator claimed that he makes an average number of copies of at least
5000 per day with standard deviation of 75 copies. To make sure that he has enough supplies
and avoid understocking, he monitored the number of copies he produced for 30 days which was
noted at an average of 5105. At a .05 level of significance, is the average number of copies
produced per day is different from 5000? what will you recommend to the operator?
Null hypothesis: the average number of copies produced per day is 5000.
Alternative hypothesis: The average number of copies produced per day is different from 5000.
Level of significance: .05/2 = .025
Critical Value: ±1.96

NORMAL CURVE:
-1.96 1.96
-1.96 -1.96
Decision rule: Reject null hypothesis if Z < -1.96 or Z > 1.96; otherwise, do not reject the null
hypothesis.
Computation: Z = (5,105 – 5,000) = 7.67

75

√30

Conclusion: Reject the null hypothesis, 7.67 > 1.96; which means there is enough evidence that
copies produced per day is different from 5000.
Recommendation: In accordance with the results, the copier machine operator should increase
the number of copies to make sure that he has enough supplies and to avoid understocking.
2. A social media Agency reported that college students spent an average of 30 hours per week
on Facebook with standard deviation of 2.5 hours. To find out if this still true, a new survey was
conducted among 50 students and reported an average of 28 hours spent on Facebook. At a .01
level of significance, is there average number of hours which college students spent on Facebook
different from 30 hours? based on the result, what advice will you give to the students?

Null Hypothesis: The average number of hours which college students spent on Facebook is 30.

Alternative Hypothesis: The average number of hours which college students spent on
Facebook different from 30 hours

Level of significance: .01/2 = .005

Critical Value: ±2.575

NORMAL CURVE:
-2.575 2.575

Decision rule: Reject null hypothesis if Z < -2.575 or Z > 2.575; otherwise, do not reject the null
hypothesis.

Computation: Z = (28 – 30) = -5.67

2.5
√50

Conclusion: Reject the null hypothesis, -5.67 < 2.575; which means there is enough evidence number of
hours which college students spent on Facebook is different from 30 hours.

Recommendation: Based on the results, the students must limit their spent time on Facebook to lessen
their exposure from the screen which may affect their health.
