1.0 INTRODUCTION:

TRUETZSCHLER India Pvt. Ltd. Ahmedabad. proposes Geotechnical investigation work

for construction of Factory at Plot No. SM-45, Sanand Industrial Estate-2, Tal: Sanand.
Dist: Ahmedabad. State: Gujarat.

The purpose of the investigations was to determine the sub soil stratification, geotechnical
information & safe bearing capacity, so as to provide information that will assist the structural
engineers in the design of the foundations and the relevant works.

The Job was carried out under the guidance and supervision of the soil personnel of M. K.
Soil Testing Laboratory and client’s engineer.

2.0 FIELD WORK:

2.1 Borehole

Eight boreholes having 150mm diameter were drilled using rotary drilling method upto 10.0m
depth below existing ground level (EGL).

The location of the boreholes were decided with due consideration of client /consultant of the
project.

The location of the boreholes are shown in location plan in drawing part of report.

2.1.1 Disturbed Samples

Disturbed representative samples were collected, logged, labelled and placed in polythene
bags.

2.1.2 Undisturbed Samples

Undisturbed soil samples are collected in 100 mm diameter thin walled samplers (Shelby
tube). The sampler used for the sampling had smooth surface and appropriate area ratio and
cutting edge angle thereby minimizing disturbance during sampling.

2.1.3 Method of Sampling

Sampler is coupled together with a sampler head to form a sampling assembly. The sampler
head provides a non-flexible connection between the sampling tube and the drill rods. Vent
holes are provided in the sampler head to allow escape of water/air from the top of sampler
tube during penetration. The sampling tubes are made free from dust and rust. Coating of oil
is applied on both sides to obtain the undisturbed samples in best possible manner.

1
Job No: MK/31/02-20 M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory, Ahmedabad – 54.

The sampler is then lowered inside the bore hole on a string of rods and driven to a pre-
determined level. On completion of driving the sampler is first rotated within the
borehole to shear the soil sample at bottom and then pulled out. Upon removal of the
sampling tubes ends covered with tight wrapper. The identification mark is then made on
each sample.

2.2 Standard Penetration Test

The standard penetration tests are conducted in bore as per IS: 2131: 1981 (Reaffirmed
1987). The split spoon sampler resting on the bottom of bore hole is allowed to sink under its
own weight, then the split spoon sampler is seated 15cm with the blows of hammer falling
through 750mm. The driving assembly consists of a driving head and a 63.5 kg weight.

It is ensured that the energy of the falling weight is not reduced by friction between the drive
weight and the guides or between ropes. The rods to which the sampler is attached for
driving are straight, tightly coupled and straight in alignment. Thereafter the split spoon
sampler is further driven by 30cm. The number of blows required to drive each 15cm
penetration is recorded. The first 15cm of drive considered as seating drive. The total blows
required for the second and third 15cm penetration is termed as a penetration
resistance - N value.

3.0 LABORATORY TEST:

The laboratory tests on soil samples were started immediately after the receipt of the same
in the laboratory. All laboratory tests are carried out as per the respective Indian Standards.
The results of the laboratory tests were performed on various samples are presented in the
form of Table No. 2 and drawing part end of report.

5.0 GROUND WATER TABLE:

The Ground water table was not encountered upto 10.0m depth below EGL at the time of
investigation (February – 2020)

3
Job No: MK/31/02-20 M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory, Ahmedabad – 54.

6.0 TYPICAL CALCULATIONS FOR SAFE BEARING CAPACITY:

6.1 Assumption / Data: (BH-3)

i. Type of foundation considered : Square foundation.

ii. Total Permissible settlement : 50mm for footing

(Ref.: IS: 1904-1986)

iii. Depth of foundation below EGL : 2.0m

iv. Size of foundation : 2.00m x 2.00m

v. Water Table : Not Encountered

6.2 Bearing Pressure Based on C &  Values: - (Shear Criterion)

Following soil properties are adopted at 2.00m depth for calculation of safe bearing capacity.
C = 0.65 Kg/cm2

 = 14.0 (Considering mixed shear failure)

The ultimate net bearing capacity (Qnd) for footing on soil and mixed shear failure is given

by equation,

Qnd = 2/3 C Nc Sc dc ic + q (Nq-1) sq dq iq + 0.5 B DD Nr Sr dr ir

Where,

Qnd = Net ultimate bearing capacity of foundation.

C = Cohesion at foundation level = 0.65 Kg/cm2

DD = Dry density at foundation level = 0.00164 Kg/cm3

D = Effective depth of foundation = 200 cm

B = Width of foundation = 200 cm

q = Effective surcharge at base level of foundation

= DD x D = 0.246 kg/cm2

Sc, Sq, Sr are shape factor for square footing.

Sc = 1.30, Sq = 1.20, Sr = 0.80

dc, dq, dr, are depth factors,

(Assuming that overburden soil is not compacted properly)

dc = 1.0, dq = 1.0, dr = 1.0

4
Job No: MK/31/02-20 M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory, Ahmedabad – 54.

ic, iq, ir are inclination factors.

ic = iq = ir = 1.0 (Since load is considered as a vertical)

Adopting Nc, Nq, Nr factors as per IS: 6403 as below:

For  = 14.0 and mixed shear failure (void ratio = 0.62)

Nc = 9.61, Nq = 3.18, Nr = 1.91,

Qnd = [2/3 x 0.65 x 9.61 x 1.30 x 1.0 x 1.0] + [0.246 x (3.18 - 1) x 1.20 x 1.0 x 1.0]

+ [0.5 x 200.0 x 0.00164 x 1.91 x 0.8 x1.0 x 1.0]

= 6.307 Kg/cm2

Where,

Qnd is net ultimate bearing capacity,

Adopting factor of safety as 3.0

Qnd 6.307
qs = ------------ = ------------
FS 3.0

= 2.10 Kg/cm2 = 21.0 t/m2

6.2.1 Bearing Pressure Based on Settlement Criterion:

(From Consolidation Settlement)

Pressure bulb shall be taken as,

2.0 x B = 2.0 x 2.0 = 4.0m below foundation level,
Assuming pressure distribution as 2(vertical) : 1(Horizontal)
Now,
Mid depth of compressible stratum is at 4.0m depth below GL.

Following parameters are adopted,

Avg. Compression index (Cc) at mid depth below GL = 0.070

Initial void ratio (eo) at mid depth below GL = 0.60

Po = Increase in pressure at mid depth below GL = (1.64 x 4.0) = 6.56 t/m2

δp = Increase in pressure at middle cohesive soil layer.

P x 2.00 x 2.00
δp = ---------------------- = 0.25P
4.00 x 4.00

Considering P = 32.0 t/m2

5
Job No: MK/31/02-20 M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory, Ahmedabad – 54.

Settlement (S) in cm at mid depth for compressible stratum is given in equation.

Cc H Po + dp
Sc = ----------- log10 (-------------)
1 + eo Po

0.07 x 400 6.56 + 0.25 x 32.0

Sc = --------------------- log10 (---------------------------)
1 + 0.60 6.56

Sc = 6.060 cm

Immediate Settlement,
q x B x (1- 2) x I
Si = -----------------------------
Es
Where

 = 0.4 (For clay)

I = 0.95 (As per IS: 8009 (Part I)

Es = 250 x Cu = say 200 kg/cm2

(Ref: Foundation Design Manual By N V Nayak, Table No. 2.15.6)

3.2 x 200 x (1 - 0.42) x 0.95

Si = ------------------------------------------
200
= 2.554 cm

Total settlement = Sc + Si

= 6.060 + 2.554 = 8.613 cm

For L/B = 1.0 and LB/D = 1.0, depth factor Df = 0.72 and rigidity factor = 0.80

Appling depth factor and rigidity factor,

Corrected settlement = 8.613 x 0.8 x 0.72

= 4.961 cm = 49.6 mm

Hence bearing pressure = 32.0 t/m2 for permissible settlement of 50mm.

Hence recommended net SBC is 20 t/m2
