Assignment - 02

The document provides 3 questions about hydroelectric dam design projects in Ethiopia. Question 1 involves identifying the most appropriate dam type for two potential dam sites based on initial evidence, and defining a program of further investigations. Question 2 involves designing a constant radius arch dam that is 80m high across a 100m wide valley. Question 3 involves designing a 100m constant angle arch dam across a 50m wide valley.

Assignment - 02

- For the first part copying is not allowed use your judgment and arrive at a
convenient argument
- Assume required data: if you require more information

Q#1. A remote, steep sided and narrow upland valley in Ethiopia is under construction for
development of hydroelectric power purposes. Initial reconnaissance indicates that the 40 km2
catchment has generally thin superficial mantle, frequent intensive rock exposures, minimal
hydrological data with historical evidence flood flows in the downstream reaches of the
catchment approaching 180 to 200 m3/s. Access to the valley is difficult but ground surveys have
identified two possible dam sites:
Site A: Requires a dam of 50m nominal height and 450m length between steep valley
sides. evidence shows deep deposits of till overlying rock on the valley floor.

Site B: Located 300m d/s of site A, with a width at crest level at 320m b/n steep rocky
abutments, but requires a dam 60m high. Valley floor has evidence of competent rock
at shallow depth.
Solution required
a) State, and justify in terms of sites the evidence so far available, the type of dam,
likely to prove most appropriate on each A & B.

b) Define and explain a program of further investigations designed to confirm the

suitability of each site to the type dam proposed under (a).

Q#2. Design a constant radius arch dam for a valley of 100m wide at the base and 150m
at a height of 80m use allowable stress of concrete, σ all=4 MN /m2

Q#3. Design a 100m constant angle arch dam for a valley of 50m at the base and 200m at
a height of 100m.Use permissible compressive stress for concrete to be σ all=5 MN /m2.
