t is with pride and humility that we note that as of this
year, we have each worked for IHRSA for at least 20 years.
We may not be as young as we once were, but we can say,
without hesitation, that whether you are a club developer, an
owner, a fitness center employee, a supplier, or in some other
related position, there has never been a better - or more crucial
- time to be a part of the health and fitness industry!
Around the world, more than 180,000 health clubs are making their communities
stronger, in more ways than one. Ours is now an $84 billion global industry, and
it’s expanding impressively each year according to every key metric, including
number of clubs, membership levels and usage, and, of course, revenue.
Is there work still to be done? Certainly. According to the McKinsey Global
Institute, the global obesity epidemic costs the world economy some $2 trillion
per year. That being said, should the health and fitness industry’s solid growth
over the past year be celebrated? Absolutely!
And celebrate we did in March, when more than 13,000 people gathered at
IHRSA 2015 in Los Angeles to recognize the successes of a thriving industry,
showcased the newest and most innovative equipment, programs, and technology,
and reinforced the industry’s commitment to increase physical activity levels
across the globe. The high-energy event gathered together thousands of health
club owners, operators, suppliers, and fitness industry professionals from a
record 84 countries.
IHRSA 2016 is set for March 21-24, 2016 in sunny Orlando, Florida. Plans are
already well underway to make this the biggest and best-ever IHRSA International
Convention & Trade Show. However, one need not wait until then for exceptional
educational and networking opportunities. We invite you to join us for any or all
of the following events:
• The IHRSA Institute, to be held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (August 4-7, 2015);
• The IHRSA/Fitness Brasil Latin American Conference & Trade Show, to be held
in São Paulo, Brazil (September 17-19, 2015);
• The European Congress, to be held in Marseille, France (October 19-22, 2015);
• The IHRSA/Mercado Fitness Mexico City Conference & Trade Show, to be held
in Santa Fe, Mexico (October 22-24, 2015); and
• The ChinaFit/IHRSA China Management Forum, to be held in Zhengzhou,
China (November 10-13, 2015)
For details about any of these events, please visit ihrsa.org/meetings.
Needless to say, we are eager to see what the next 20 years have in store. We
may be showing our age again by quoting from the Great American Songbook,
but the sentiment holds true. For our industry—The Best is Yet to Come!
