The world shakes suddenly by this unseen threat of life of human beings
that brought the economic growth into pieces especially the tourism industry of the
Philippines. The last few months have seen an unexpected upending of the modern
way of life. Countries all over the world have been instituting quarantine and
lockdown efforts in order to contain the spread of the novel corana virus , now
named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Covid-19, first
described as a pneumonia of unknown origin was first discovered in Wuhan Hubei
Province in China in late December 2019. This terrifying novel corana virus Covid-19
and stated as the worst virus that hits the world and results to paralyze the
economic growth status of each countries around the world. The World Health
Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared Covid-19 a pandemic, pointing to the
over 118,000 cases of the coronavirus illness in over 110 countries and territories
around the world and the sustained risk of further global spread.
The devastating risk that we face off that affects around the world. The
first cases of local transmission of Covid-19 in the Philippines were first confirmed in
the February to early March 2020. Because of this Philippine government instituted
preventive measures in order to reduce the chances of transmission in the country.
This pandemic change and affects the way of life that we have before. This is where
the start affect the tourism industry of the Philippines. As we all know that the
tourism industry has long been a backbone of the Philippine economy. It is one of
the important sector for Philippine economy. It is a one source of income of income
of our country. In fact, according to the studies that I have read that tourism
industry is one of the single biggest contributors to the country’s GDP. According to
the Philippine Statistics Authority, Philippine tourism comprised 12.7% of the GDP in
the year of 2015. But unfortunately Covid-19 strikes hard into tourism industry in
the Philippines things began to change from the best to worst situation state of all.
The pandemic heavily impacted tourism where affects many works of people and
even local people . Due to pandemic they lessen the manpower or the work of
people and lead to unemployment and scarcity of job opportunities. Many jobs were
lost and the source of income of tourism industry decreased into its lowest form but
worst of all many innocent people suffered and died due to this life taker virus.
Tourism industry starts to loose control on how they are going to maintain its
normal income. It is so badly that the establishments and the tourists spots in the
Philippines forced by the pandemic to closed which lead to stop operating and which
lead to the decreasing of economic growth of the tourism industry in the Philippines.
The economic activity slowed by the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the reason why they
lessen of workers is to implement and to measure the safety protocols and
procedures to lessen the spread of the deadly known corona virus. This results also
to us border closures and travel restrictions prevented tourists to go here in our
country. The Philippines government implemented of a strict nationwide lockdown ,
the nightmare began to start and everything has change. Because of severe
pandemic that conquered around the world that results to massive disruptions in the
world’s airline, travel and tourism industries. Knowing that tourism sector is a major
source of employment, government revenue and foreign exchange earnings, these
disruptions will cause a significant contraction in our country’s GDP and contribute
the rising number unemployment and the economic recession.
The World Health Organization (WHO) , Department of Health (DOH) and the
Philippine government they are striving hard to plan the next move on how they are
going to facilitate the development of COVID-19 vaccines that meet the FDA’s
rigorous scientific standards. While Co-organized by the United Nations Institute for
Training Research (UNITAR) in partnership with the UP Asian Institute of Tourism
(UPAIT) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, they are having webinars to
talk and will explore possible solutions towards the responsible recovery of the
tourism industry in the Philippines. They are having plans and forums to talk about
on how they look tourism industry in the times of the pandemic and in the future
“This virus is creating new ways for everyone to think of how to keep your family
and friends safe. We are in uncharted territory and we will all learn together. At one
time I did not know how much time our family would have together. So I have
gratitude now for everyday that we get to be together. -Cristian Gigstad
