Reflection On Project

First when our professor told us that we have to design a sprinkler system on each
building of University of Mindanao. At first when I heard it, I was frightened, because I thought
it is hard to do the design and aside from that I do not design a sprinkler system. But our
professor said that there is some guide that he will produce to us. I was so happy when I heard
it again. We all know that that start is so very hard, it is because we do not know where we
start on our design. Aside from that the floor plan that is given to us is not complete detail and
the no complete dimensions. So, we ask our adviser what should we do? the dimension of the
floor plan is not complete. Our adviser said that we need to estimate the dimensions on each
floor plan, because it is not given. We are so freak out, because we do not know how to
estimate it and how to start the design.

We did the easy one first and we set aside the dimensions and how we are going to
estimate the dimensions of each floor plan. What we do is we read the source that was given to
us by our adviser to boast our mind. We familiarize the standards coming from the book and
learn some things from it. On the next day our adviser said that he wanted to see our partial
work, our partial design. Again, we are freak out because the dimensions of the floor plan is not
yet estimated and we do not know how to do it. But it sudden our groupmate sent a sketch and
said he already done estimated the dimensions of the floor plan. So, we are smiling and do the
next steps and that was identifying what sprinklers that we should use and calculated the total
area of the building.

The next google meet, we present our partial works and also the other groups. While
listening to their design we get some ideas and information that could help for our design. our
adviser also gives a comment on what we should do and change to make our design more
efficient. On that night we designated our group to do their task for the design it was so
stressful and the same time I was amaze, because I did not expect I can learn and be able to
design a sprinkler system even though I do not have experience doing it. So, I did my part and
so my groupmates.

After the task that being assigned to us, we compiled it and put it on a single file. I was
afraid it is because I have doubt that my work is not correct and make the things hard and if
that will happen, they will do it again and we spend more time doing again my work. Luckily it is
not that bad, there are some mistakes but not too many and can be change in an instant. So,
we are glad that we start our design and apply our knowledge getting from the sources that we
read.

I learned a lot from this project, for instance the standards must strictly follow if you are
designing a sprinkler system for one particular establishment. In order to follow the pipe sizing,
the number of sprinklers you must know the basic rule and the formula that should use to base
of what you need or how many you need for your design. when I was doing it, my groupmates
assigned me on some calculation to identify the flowrate and the pump that we will use for our
design. I was thinking that I have more to learn in life, I also think that what I have learned from
my course is not enough or not that many it is just a stepping stone that I should use to
discover and learn more from my course.

I also think that designing some safety for establishment is not that easy to do. There
are so many to consider and formulas, steps and rules that should be follow. Now I know how
hard to become and engineer. What I say that? It is because you have the duty or responsibility
to carry daily. If you are not careful and neglect the basic or the fundamentals you will get
yourself a problem. Although it is hard to start and read the references that our adviser gave to
us, but when you start understanding the concept of the work it is amazing for you as a learner.
Although there are times that it is hard to understand what are the book saying and you need
to search it on the internet to visualize. You may also call a help from your groupmates who
understand the meaningwritten in thebook.

I am glad that our adviser that he let us to this kind of work. It is like a training or
experience for me not just for me also for me classmates who work hard also to make their
design efficient and safety. I hope in the future I can use some of the knowledge that I learned
while doing the fire protection project for CHE building. This is might be a small experience for
me but for sure soon I can encounter with this kind of work I will do my best and apply what I
learned from my professors and from my classmates also. I think I will read more and focus
more on my field, I got excited for the future that I am going to face as an engineer I hope I can
do well to the projects that I will do. there might be so many steps to do to reach this goal but I
am sure I will not give up until I reach it. I am grateful that I take this course.
