Parabola has a lot of applications in our daily life. It is seen and applied everywhere; one example is in
the game “Angry Birds”. Using the example below, explore the different elements of a parabola by do-
ing what is asked.
1. Determine the vertex of each parabola. Then, write your answer in the blank provided below each
graph.
2. Draw horizontal line that is parallel to the x-axis above the vertex of f(x).

In this part of the lesson, you will learn the concepts of parabolas. This will help
you achieve the competencies mentioned above.

Recall the intersection of a plane to double-napped cones. It is concluded that when the plane
intersects on one and only one cone diagonally and is parallel to the edge of the cone, a parabola is then
formed. Let us formally define a parabola. You may go over the discussion on pages 20-21 of your
TEXTBOOK.
• The vertex serves as a guide for you to determine the intersection of the
parabola and the axis of symmetry. The vertex of the parabola can be at (0,0)
or at (h,k), where h and k are all real numbers.
• The focus and the directrix will let you determine the opening of the pa-
rabolas.
Concept Check!
A parabola with vertex at the origin and y-axis as the axis of symmetry has the equation

Do not forget to verify your answers using the key answers provided.
Note: The value of p is actually the distance of the vertex from its focus and is used to determine
the direction of the parabola. If p < 0 (p is negative), then the parabola either opens downard or to
the left. If p > 0 (p is positive), then the parabola either opens upward or to the right. (Tamayo
et.al,2017)

Example 1: Find the coordinates of the focus and the equation of the directrix for each
parabola with vertex (0,0).
a. 𝑦 2 = 12𝑥
b. 𝑦 2 = −32𝑥
c. 𝑥 2 − 2𝑦 = 0
d. 𝑥 2 = 20𝑦
e. 𝑦 2 − 48𝑥 = 0
Compare the given equations to the equation of the parabola in standard
form given on page 24 of your TEXTBOOK.
𝑦 2 = −32𝑥

NOTE: Transpose the linear term of y term to the right
side of the equation then retain the quadratic term of
the x term on the left side of the equation.
Then, based on the examples above, try to solve these! Fill in the blanks with the correct answers.
Solution:

Lesson 3.3: Determining the Standard Form of the
Equation of a Parabola with Vertex at (0,0)
Now, you will determine the standard form of the parabola given its elements. To do this, you
have to read and analyze the examples on pages 27-28 of your TEXTBOOK. You can also refer to the
examples given below for further explanations.
Example 2: Write the equation of a parabola with vertex at the origin that satisfies the
given condition.
a. The focus has coordinates (0, 6).
b. The equation of the directrix is y – 4 = 0.
c. The length of the latus rectum is 8 and the parabola opens downward.
d. The parabola contains the point (1,3) and opens to the right.
e. The parabola contains the point (-2,1) and opens to the left.
Here are some suggested steps that may be helpful for you:
Step 1: Identify what form of parabola equation should be used.
Step 2: Find the value of p.
Step 3: Substitute p in the equation and simplify 4p.
3. The length of the latus rectum is 8 and the parabola opens downward.
Form of Equation: Since the parabola opens downward, the equation of the parabola is
in the form x2 = 4py.
Value of p: Recall that the length of the latus rectum equals 4p. By substitution,
4p = 8.
Thus, p = 2.
Substitute and Simplify: x2 = 4(2)y
x2 = 8y
Therefore, the equation of the parabola with vertex (0,0) and whose latus rectum has a length of 8 is x2
= 8y.
6
4. The parabola contains the point (1,3) and opens to the right.
Form of Equation: Since the parabola opens to the right, the equation of the parabola
is in the form y2 = 4px.
Value of p: To find the value of p, we may use the coordinates of the given
point (1,3). That is, substitute x = 1 and y=3 to the equation y2 =
4px.
y2 = 4px
32 = (4p)(1)
9 = 4p
9/4 = 4p/4
9/4 = p
Thus, p = 9/4.
Substitute and Simplify: y2 = 4px
y2 = 4(9/4)x
y2 = 9x
Therefore, the equation of the parabola with vertex (0,0), contains the point (1,3), and opens to the right
is y2 = 9x.
5. The parabola contains the point (2,1) and opens to the right.
Form of Equation: Since the parabola opens to the _______, the equation of the
parabola is in the form __________.
Value of p: To find the value of p, we may use the coordinates of the given
point ________. That is, substitute x = ____ and y=____ to the
equation _______.
Thus, _________
Substitute and Simplify:
Therefore, the equation of the parabola with vertex (0,0), contains the point ________, and opens to the
________ is ____________.

Parabolas may seem too abstract, but parabolas have many real-life ap-
plications. Click the link below to get acquainted with the wonders of parab-

Parabolas can, in fact, be seen everywhere, in nature as well as manmade items. Here are some examples cited
by Dotson,J from Sciencing(2020).
Anyone who rides a roller coaster will be familiar with the rise and
fall created by the track’s parabolas.
Consider a fountain. The water shot into the air by the fountain falls back in a
parabolic path.
A ball thrown into the air also follows a parabolic path. Galileo had demonstrated
this.
The famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, has parabolas on each side
of its side spans or towers.
Parabolas are also commonly used when light needs to be focused. Over the centuries, lighthouses underwent
many variations and improvements to the light they could emit. Flat sur-
faces scattered light too much to be useful to mariners. Spherical reflec-
tors increased brightness, but could not give a powerful beam. But using
a parabola-shaped reflector helped focus light into a beam that could be
seen for long distances.

Parabolas in Spaceflight
The shimmering, stretched arc of a rocket launch gives perhaps the most striking example of a parabola. When
a rocket, or other ballistic object, is launched, it follows a parabolic path, or trajec-
tory. This parabolic trajectory has been used in spaceflight for decades. In fact, air-
planes can create zero- and high-gravity environments by flying in parabolas. Special
airplanes fly at a steep angle, giving a higher-gravity experience, and then drop into
what is called freefall, giving a zero-gravity experience. Also, such parabolic flights
save money by not having to perform every experiment in space itself.
Now that you are already familiar with some real-life applications of parabolas, you are now ready
to solve word problems involving parabolas. Proceed to page 88 of your TEXTBOOK first and analyze
how the word problems were solved. Note that it is important to comprehend the word problem first
before you proceed with the solution.
