Topic: Environmental Pollution

Scene. 01
Students of grade 10 gather at Ali’s Ottaq and they discuss about the sickness due to insanitary
conditions in their surroundings.
Ali (worriedly). I am quite worried about the sanitary conditions in our area. It does not make
a mountain out of a molehill.
Sudheer (restlessly). We are in deep water because my family members are sick due to stagnant
water. Dengue has caught them.
Ali (impatiently). Unfortunately, my younger brother is sick due to unclean water. Although our
people are down the earth yet they rarely raise the slogans against any problem.
Mumtaz (excitedly) Look at that on TV. This news channel is giving coverage to the insanitary
conditions across the city.
Ali. I thinks that it is for the first time that any channel gives coverage to this issue.

Sudheer. Regrettably, our efforts are drop in the bucket.

Ali. (anxiously) Yet we can do something regarding this issue.
Sudheer: You are right. We should meet our head of the school to discuss the matter.
Mumatz: We will visit him tomorrow at any cost to motivate him for such purpose. He is
the ray of sunshine.
Sudheer: Remember! We have to sell ice to Eskimos.
Scenario: Next day. The students of grade 10 meet the head of the school and they bring the issue in his
knowledge and also they request him to take some steps against the insanitary conditions.
The head of Government Boys Secondary School Malir plans to have rally along with students and
heads of other school of the area about the insanitary conditions across Karachi.
The School Head conducts a meeting with the active students to assign their duties during rally. And he
gives some instructions regarding rally.
Head: Dear students. As you know there are many contiguous diseases spread across the country
specially Karachi. In order to aware people about the environmental pollution; we are going to arrange
a rally with students and heads of other schools. For this; I would like to give you some instructions to
make the rally successful.
There are two groups of scouts and each group will have 8 students from grade 9 and 10. All the scouts
will have individual dress code. Group A will lead the rally and group B will monitor the rally.
Remember to have your protest recorded peacefully and avoid any commotion.
Scene. 02
The heads of the schools along with the students walking towards the press club with the rally. And
many students are holding the placards inscribed slogans on. The rally marches peacefully towards the
press club. The people around are very excited, cheering and raising the slogans with students and
heads. Finally, they reached the place and the head is getting ready to deliver the speech.
Scene. 03
Head: Respected schools’ heads, my dear students and the patriotic citizens.
Asslam-O-Alikum,
Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems that the world faces today and we all are in hot
water economically, physically and everyday life. The contamination of the environment is also being
linked to some of the diseases that are around currently. Yet, most people do not know about this
problem. This shows that environmental pollution is becoming an increasingly worse problem that
needs to be taken care of as soon as possible, not only for the good of the environment but also for the
people that live in it. Many factors are present for why environmental pollution has become such a large
issue in our country. However, if the Pakistani were to address the issue it would definitely help both
the environment and them. On the other hand, if the current way the world’s environmental problem is
being handled continues, catastrophic consequences can follow for the future population. I regret to
draw your attention about the unhealthy conditions prevailing not only in the area but across Karachi.
The heaps of garbage and choked gutters can be seen around. The side drains are not cleaned properly
because of our negligence and carelessness. Many streets are full of stagnant water and have become
mosquito breeding places. The unhealthy conditions have created health problems for the residents
within the areas. We all are in the same boat.
Pollution is one of the biggest challenges faced by the world today. All the countries are adopting more
and more laws on pollution reduction. Still, governmental actions cannot guarantee the complete
elimination of this problem. The main thing is to make all the ordinary people understand the importance
of this issue and to make them respect the environment they live in.
It is the time for everyone to wake up and work as a single cohesive unit against the pollution. Being
aware of its bad effects that has to be more than enough to work on pollution reduction. We should
avoid throwing garbage in an open area rather dispose it off without harming the environment. In
addition to this, we must clean side drains to avoid stagnant water that could be a breeding nursery of
mosquitos. Besides, planting more and more green plants is a very good option to bring back the
resource-use equilibrium. Internationally, different stakeholders have taken the pollution under their
consideration. Due to this:

 The UN Conference on Human Environment was convened to study the profound changes in
the relationship between man and his environment in the wake of modern scientific and
technological developments.
 The World Health Organization also set up an international network for the monitoring and
study of environmental pollution on a global scale and for devising possible remedies.
No matter what other people do, the main action should come from people. This is the only way to stop
the spread of pollution from destroying our home, our school, our city and our beloved country.

Scene: 04
Rally demonstrators disperse peacefully.

Scene: 05
After few days, the same students of grade 10 gather at Ali’s Ottaq and they discuss about the successful
rally and the report broadcasted on TV.
Mumtaz (excitedly). It was a wonderful rally I have ever seen.
Sudheer (Joyously). Oh Yes! It really meant something for me. Since, I got information regarding
the pollution and its harmful effects on us, I have changed my mind to keep
my surrounding clean. Because, I did not know about the harms of pollution
on our health and I used to throw garbage in an open area and around my
school.
Ali (impatiently). Look at that on TV. It’s the rally coverage that we had few days before.
Mumtaz. I think that it’s a repeat telecast.
Sudheer. Not only the news channels have given the coverage to our rally but many
newspapers also covered the event. I read the responses of different senior
citizens but more fruitful responses by the officials have consoled me the most.
Ali. (anxiously) Which fruitful responses by whom?
Sudheer: The minister of local bodies, the city mayor, and the chairman of union council
mentioned our school as one of the best schools in the city to bring awareness
the locals as well as other people about the most sensitive issue of the city and
country. They further promised to clean all the areas of the city with the
cooperation of local people. It was to sail against the wind.
Mumtaz Oh really! That’s quite appreciable because the officials have initiated the steps
towards the betterment of environment.
Sudheer: We should also appreciate our worthy head who wonderfully organized the
rally and delivered very motivational speech that has changed our minds
completely. If we go with the flow, we will get rid of
Ali (acceptably) We should write a thank you note to our respected head.

King Bruce and the Spider

By. Eliza Cook
King Bruce of Scotland flung himself down It's head grew steady again it went,
In a lonely mood to think; And travelled a half-yard higher;
Tis true he was monarch and wore a crown, T was a delicate thread it had to tread,
But his heart was beginning to sink. 4 And a road where its feet would tire. 32

For he had been trying to do a great deed, Again it fell and swung below,
To make his people glad; But again it quickly mounted,
He had tried and tried, but couldn't succeed, Till up and down, now fast, now slow
So became quite sad. 8 Nine brave attempts were counted. 36

He flung himself down in a low despair, "Sure," cried the King, "that foolish thing
As grieved as man could be, Will strive no more to climb,
And after a while, as he pondered there, When it toils so hard to reach and cling,
"I'll give it all up" said he. 12 And tumbles every time." 40

Now just at the moment a spider dropped, But up the insect went once more-
With its silken cobweb clue, Ah me! 'tis an anxious minute
And the King in the midst of his thinking stopped He's only a foot from his cobweb door'
To see what the spider would do. 16 Oh, say, will he lose or win it? 44

‘T was a long way up to the ceiling dome, Steadily, steadily, inch by inch,
And it hung by a rope so fine, Higher and higher he got,
That how it would get to its cobweb home And a bold little run at the very last pinch
King Bruce could not divine. 20 Put him into his native cot 48

It soon began to cling and crawl "Bravo! bravo!" the King cried out,
Straight-up with strong endeavour; All honour to those who try!
But down it came with a slippery sprawl. The spider up there defied despair-
As near to the ground as ever. 24 He conquered, and why should not I?" 52

Up, up it ran, not a second, could stay, And Bruce of Scotland braced his mind,
To utter the least complaint, And gossips tell the tale
Till it fell still lower, and there it lay, That he tried once more as he tried before
A little dizzy and faint. 28 And that time did not fail. 56
