Activity: Visual Perception / Assignment 7.1

Answer the following questions.

1. What are the teacher’s perceptions towards the use of visuals in teaching?

Most teachers understand the power of visual aids in helping students grasp content. Teachers
value the support that visual lend to classroom instruction because they encourage students to make
associations between pieces of information, soak up chunks of course content quickly, and function as a
memory aid. The use of visual aids enables the teachers to engage their students closely with the literary
texts despite of being able to facilitate students of different proficiency level in reading the texts with
interest. Using of visual aid is relevant and enjoyable because it makes easier for the students to
understand the abstract ideas in the texts. Since the literary texts are often abstract, it made it easier for
the teachers to explain the texts through visual aids such as pictures and animation videos. Indeed, it can
be interpreted that the majority of the teachers have positive perceptions of the use of visual aids in
teaching and it is enjoyable to teach using visual aids which leads to the improvement student’s
performance.

2.How can the use of visuals be integrated in teaching specific subjects?

Visual is a relevant method to enhance the students understanding in literary text. So, it is a very
good method that could be applied by all the teachers. There should be unity in using visuals whether it
is verbal so that it functions together. Integrated visuals can be achieved by using related or repeated
themes, colors, shapes and types or directions of lines. Idea must be presented one at a time. Elements
not needed must be removed. Using of visuals be integrated by the use of different strategies and learning
styles explore a variety of subject area. It is important to integrate visual in teaching specific subjects
because it reduces anxiety, increase comprehension, and can even help with decoding. Visual aid is a
relevant method to enhance the student’s understanding in literary text, so it’s a very good method that
could be applied by all the teachers.

3. How can the use of visual aids be fully utilized as an effective learning tool in motivating students
and fostering them to learn more?

It is important to use large visuals that everyone can see it simultaneously. Using videos and
pictures allow the students to comprehend better because they will be able to see what is exactly
happening in the literary texts and they don’t really rely on listening where they might lose their
concentration. It is also important to use simple materials, cover irrelevant material in visuals with plain
paper, holds visual steady when showing them to a group by resting them against a desk or table or putting
them on an easel, limit the number of pictures used in a given period of time, use just one at a time except
for purposes of comparison, keep audience attention and help them learn from a visual by asking direct
questions about it, teach audience to interpret visuals, display questions pertaining to each visual
alongside it and provide written or verbal cues to highlight important information contained in a visuals.
