Today Sri Rama Navami
Today is Uttarayana, Vasantha Ruthu, Chaithra masam, Sukla paksha, Navami thithi, known as
Sri Rama Navami, the day Lord Sri Rama was born as the eldest son of King Dasaratha and his
prime queen Kausalya Devi at Ayodhya on the banks of sacred river Sarayu. Ayodhya the place
where Lord Sri Rama was born and from where ruled this world for more than 11000 years is
held in high esteem as one of the seven most sacred places known as Sapta Puri in the Indian
Sub-continent. Other six such places are Mathura, Kasi, Kanchi, Avantika (Ujjain), Puri
(Jagannathapuri), and Dwarka. These seven places are said to be the most holy and religious
places attached with great spiritual importance that leads one towards salvation.
It was seventh among the Dasavatharas of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu that took place in the 24 th
Thretha Yuga of Vaivasvatha Manvanthara. Lord Vishnu Himself took the form of Lord Sri
Rama along with His consort Goddess Lakshmi Devi as Sita Devi his wife, Lord Aadi Sesha
(the seat on which He reclines) as Lakshmana, His famous weapon Sudarshana Chakra (Lord
Sudarshana) as Bharatha and His Conch Panchajanya as Sathrughna as His brothers.
This day is celebrated as the birth day of Lord Sri Rama across the country in a grand manner
with the nine day festival known as Sri Rama Navarathri ending today. This day is also believed
and considered as the day Lord Sri Rama married Goddess Sita Devi. Famous temple town of
Bhadrachalam in Andhra Pradesh known as Dakshina Ayodhya will be flooded with devotees to
witness the famous Sita Rama Kalyanam that is being held every year on this day of Sri Rama
Navami. It is believed and said that Lord Sri Rama’s coronation (Pattabhishekam) took place on
the day of Chaithra Sukla Navami which incidentally coincides with his birth day and also the
wedding day.
At Bhadrachalam Sri Rama temple known as Sri Vaikunta Rama Kshethra, there is a tradition to
celebrate the Sri Rama Pattabhishekam (Coronation) once in twelve years known as Pushkara
Pattabhishekam. Incidentally this year Sri Rama Pattabhishekam is being held on 13 th of April
2011. It was earlier held in the year 1999. Prior to 1987 they used to conduct this celebration
once in sixty years.
Even though the epic of Lord Sri Rama occurred more than 20 millions years ago the impact of it
has so deeply penetrated into the roots of Hinduism that even today Lord Sri Rama is considered
as a role model and an embodiment of all virtues. Known as Maryada Purushottama He is the
best example of perfect character and human conduct, inspiring human beings for countless
succeeding ages.
On this auspicious day of Sri Rama Navami let us all pray the Almighty Lord Sri Rama for
peace, prosperity and welfare of mankind.
