Modify The Traits of A Target Organism

This document discusses recombinant DNA and its applications. It defines recombinant DNA as DNA formed by combining DNA fragments from different organisms or inserting a foreign DNA fragment into an original organism. The basic steps of genetic engineering to create recombinant DNA are: 1) scientists target and identify a specific gene, 2) the targeted gene is cut from its original DNA using restriction enzymes, 3) the cut gene is spliced into the DNA of another organism using ligase, 4) the spliced DNA is inserted into a host cell where it will direct the production of new proteins and characteristics. Applications of recombinant DNA include using genetically modified rennet for cheesemaking and creating beauty products with novel functions.

MODULE 1:

RECOMBINANT DNA
Genetic Engineering
- is the process of modifying or changing the genes, a part of the DNA of the organism in
order to achieve a desired change in traits of the organisms.

GENETIC ENGINEERING
- a field in biotechnology which involves the use of molecular techniques or method to
modify the traits of a target organism.

DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID
- serves as the blueprint of life
- it dictates the structure, functions and characteristics of the organism.
THEREFORE:
“ To change an organisms DNA meansto change its traits.”

Medical Advancement
Look at the illustrations below, what do you observe?

Why would altering DNA affect our characteristics or traits?

Central Dogma
- states that if transcription and translation of a fragment of the DNA lead to some traits,
then the insertion of a new fragment of the DNA in a given organism may provide it
with new traits.

How is DNA modified? (BASIC STEPS OF GENETIC ENGINEERING)

1. Scientists targets and identify specific gene.
2. They cut the targeted gene with restriction enzyme.
3. The targeted gene is “spliced” to the DNA of another organism using ligase.
4. The gene will be inserted in the host cell. Once inside the new cell, the new instruction
from the spliced DNA will direct the cell to make new proteins for new function or
characteristics.

RECOMBINAT DNA & ITS APPLICATION

1. INDUSTRY
- GM rennet (chymosin) for cheesemaking
- Beauty Product
2.
What is Recombinant DNA and what is its application?
Recombinant DNA is the resulting DNA formed through the process of recombinant DNA
technology, which involves:
1. combining DNA fragments from different organisms or
2. insertion of a foreign DNA fragment to the original organism

II. Task: Create a poster infographic. Take time to also list down the specific steps that should
be conducted to genetically engineer the glowing tree.
Example: " The Magnificent Glowing Tree in Brgy. New  San Jose, Dinalupihan, Bataan" (You
may think of your own title).  Save  and submit using a PDF File.
