Takt Time Exercise #1

Our value stream supplies barrels

Our customer requirement is: 1 CSU every 3 days (1 CSU = 1 set = 1 upper barrel, 1 lower barrel)

On a normal day, we work 8.5 hours including lunch

We have:
30 minutes for lunch
10 minute break in the morning
10 minute break in the afternoon
5 minute wash up prior to lunch
5 minute wash up prior to end of shift
6 minute daily team meeting

Calculate the Takt time to meet customer requirements

Steps to follow:
1. Calculate the daily Time Available (TA)
2. Determine the daily customer requirment (Number of CSU's per day)
3. Calcuate the takt time (Divide Time Available (TA) by daily customer requirement)
4. Convert to seconds

Answer - Takt Time Exercise #1

Step 1 - Calculate time available
510 Minutes in a day (8.5 time 60 minutes)
-30 Subtract lunch
-10 Subtract morning break
-10 Subtract afternoon break
-5 Subtract morining wash up
-5 Subtract afternoon wash up
-6 Subtract daily team meeting
Time Avail = 444 Minutes available

Step 2 - Determine the daily customer requirement

1 CSU
3 Every 3 days = 0.33 Daily requirement is for 0.33 of a CSU

Step 3 - Calculate the takt time

444 Minutes available each day
0.33 Daily CSU requirement Takt time = 1,345 Minutes

Step 4 - Convert to seconds

1,345 times 60 = 80,727 Seconds per CSU

Answer - Takt Time Exercise #2

Step 1 - Calculate time available
510 Minutes in a day (8.5 time 60 minutes)
-30 Subtract lunch
-10 Subtract morning break
-10 Subtract afternoon break
-5 Subtract morining wash up
-5 Subtract afternoon wash up
-6 Subtract daily team meeting
Time Avail = 444 Minutes available per shift
888 Total for two shifts

Step 2 - Determine the daily customer requirement

1 CSU
2 Every 2 days = 0.50 Daily requirement is for 0.50 of a CSU

Step 3 - Calculate the takt time

888 Minutes available each day
0.50 Daily CSU requirement Takt time = 1,776 Minutes

Step 4 - Convert to seconds

1,776 times 60 = 106,560 Seconds per CSU

Answer - Takt Time Exercise #3

Step 1 - Calculate time available
510 Minutes in a day (8.5 time 60 minutes)
-30 Subtract lunch
-10 Subtract morning break
-10 Subtract afternoon break
-5 Subtract morining wash up
-15 Subtract afternoon clean up
-6 Subtract daily portion of weekly team meeting
Time Avail = 434 Minutes available

Step 2 - Determine the daily customer requirement

1 HAB every day = 1/1 = 1.0 per day

1 Wingtip every 5 days = 1/5 = 0.2 per day
1 Rudder Fairing every 2 days = 1/2 = 0.5 per day

Daily customer requirement = (1.0 + 0.2 + 0.5) = 1.7 parts

Step 3 - Calculate the takt time

434 Minutes available each day
1.70 Daily part requirement Takt time 255 Minutes

Step 4 - Convert to seconds

Takt time times 60 = 15,300 Seconds per part
