EXPERIMENT 1: CIRCUITS WITH PASSIVE ELEMENTS
Q1.1 What are passive elements?
Q1.2 Study the diagrams below and identify the circuit in Fig 1.1 and 1.2
Q1.3 Choose values of R between 1 to 5kΩ, and C between 33nF to 47nF. Determine Cut-off
frequency, fc, for your values.
Q1.4 If a sinusoidal signal from a signal generator of frequency f c, as determined in Q1.3 above is
passed through circuits of Fig1.1 and 1.2 as shown, state the expected output from each
circuit.
Q1.5 Draw the output waveforms of the result in Q1.4 above as expected from the oscilloscope.
Q1.6 Consider and name the circuit in Fig 1.3.
Q1.7 Determine the lower and upper band frequencies.

Q2.2 If the terminals of the diode in Fig 2.1 is interchanged and connected across a voltage
source as shown in Fig 2.2. State and briefly explain the type of connection done.
Q2.3 Sketch the I-V forward and reverse characteristics of diode.
Q2.4 What is the minimum voltage drop across a diode if constructed from (i) Si and (ii)
Ge ?
Q2.5 If Fig 2.1 is connected across a 12V a.c supply instead of d.c, explain this type of
operation
pg. 2
Q2.6 Sketch the output signal of the connection in Q2.5 above on the oscilloscope.
Q2.7 How can you obtain a better output than the one displayed in Q2.6 above?
Q2.8 Which component is required to obtain a 12V a.c from 230 V mains? How can you
smoothen the output signal in Q2.7 ?
Q2.9 How would you measure the value of a dc voltage with a multimeter?
Fig. 3.1
Q3.1 Name the three-terminal component labelled “BCE” in the Fig. 3.1
Q3.2 How do you differentiate the three terminals with the aid of a multimeter.
Q3.3 What is the technical name for making the device to conduct.
Q3.4 What type of configuration is the circuit in Fig 3.1.
Q3.7 When the digital multimeter is connected to measure either of the circuit current (I c or
IB) in the Fig 3.1 above, it indicated “O L”, briefly explain this condition of the
multimeter and the circuit current.
Q3.8 Explain briefly the steps to take to correct the reading in Q3.7 above.
pg. 3
Q3.9 In what state does the component work as a switch.
Q3.10 List two applications of the component in question.
You are required to simulate the output characteristics of a MOSFET in common source
configuration . You will require LTSpice which is an open source SPICE simulator.
Download and install LTSpice on your computer from the link below.
https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-calculators/ltspice-simulator.html#
Procedure
pg. 4
You will find all the componens on the list. VDC is a DC source.
NMOS4 is a MOS transistor in which the transistor node can be varied with respect to the
desired width and length. Select NMOS4 from the components list.
Contrl+right click on NMOS4 gives the picture below where you can then choose the model to
use.
2. Use following two simulation commands: .dc …….( see the diagram ) to vary Vgs from
0 to 1 V with a step size of 0.001 V and Vds from 0 to 1 V with a step size of say 0.2 V.
pg. 5
.include….. will include the necessary MOSFET models
Make sure to put the model.txt file in the same folder as your schematic file.
Tasks
A. Take the sreen shot of your schematic with your computer task bar clearly visible and
B. Take the sreen shot of Id vs Vds with your computer task bar clearly visible and paste
it in your report.
