POWER SYSTEM DYNAMICS AND CONTROL

Test 1
Date: 16 December 2020 Time: 04:00 – 06:00 pm

1. Consider a wound rotor induction motor having both a 3-phase stator

winding and a 3-phase rotor winding. The rotor voltage equations are
identical in form to the stator voltage equations. Develop the following
equations for a constant rotor speed in terms of axes fixed in the rotor by a
process like that discussed for a synchronous machine.
a. State the voltage equations for six coils of the machine
b. Write the flux linkage equations associated with the coils of the
machine
c. Show that all six coil self-inductances are constant and that all six
mutual inductances among pairs of stator coils and among pairs of
rotor coils are constant.
d. Derive the expression for nine sinusoidally varying mutual
inductances between each rotor coil and all stator coils, taking rotor
angle 𝜃 as the angle of axis of phase A of rotor ahead of phase A of
stator in direction of rotor rotation.

2. Consider a 4 generator, 10 bus system shown in Fig. 1. The generator data,

transmission line data and load flow data are given in Table 1, 2 and 3
respectively. The data given is in p.u. on a 100 MVA base. The generator
data is given for 1.1 model of generator. A first order excitation system is
present at each generator.

Table 3. Load flow data

The load connected at bus 3 and 13 is a ZIP load model as given in the following
expression.
𝑃 (𝑉 ) = 𝑃 (0.4 + 0.3 ∗ 𝑉 + 0.3 ∗ 𝑉 )
𝑄 (𝑉 ) = 𝑄 (0.4 + 0.3 ∗ 𝑉 + 0.3 ∗ 𝑉 )
| |
where, 𝑉 = and 𝑃 , 𝑉 are the initial values of power and voltage at the
| |
bus as given in load flow data.
a. Compute all initial conditions of all generators considering 1.1
model of generator.
b. Compute the diagonal elements of augmented Y-bus for the given
power system network. The diagonal elements for generator and
load buses only need to be calculated.
c. Consider, a certain disturbance occurs in the network and the voltage
at load buses (3 and 13) changes to 0.99∠ − 16.12 and 1.02∠ −
24.65 respectively. Compute the current injections at both load
buses.

3. A three-phase salient pole synchronous generator with negligible armature

resistance has following values for inductance parameters.
𝐿 = 2.7656 𝑚𝐻. 𝑀 = 31.6950 𝑚𝐻. 𝐿 = 0.3771 𝑚𝐻.
𝑀 = 1.3828 𝑚𝐻. 𝐿 = 433.6569 𝑚𝐻.
During balanced steady state operation, the field current and phase-a
armature current of the machine have values as given below.
𝑖 = 4000 𝐴𝑚𝑝. 𝑖 = 20000 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃 − 30) 𝐴𝑚𝑝.
𝜃 is the angle made by d-axis with the reference axis (stator a axis) and d-
axis leads q-axis by 90° .
i. Determine instantaneous values of flux linkages
°
𝜑 , 𝜑 , 𝜑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜑 when 𝜃 = 60 .
ii. Determine instantaneous values of currents - 𝑖 , 𝑖 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖 and flux
linkages 𝜑 , 𝜑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜑 when 𝜃 = 60° .

4. Find the pu values of the parameters for 180 MVA, 16 kV, 60 Hz

synchronous machine. The machine data is given as follows.

Ld = 6.341 mH., LD = 5.989 mH., LF = 2.189 H.,

Lq = 6.118 mH, LQ=1.423 mH.,
Ll = 0.5595 mH., kMD = 5.782 mH., kMQ = 2.779 mH,
Ra = 1.542 mΩ, Rf = 0.371 Ω, RD = 18.421 mΩ, RQ= 18.969 mΩ,
Inertia = 1.711 kW S/hp. From the no-load magnetization curve, the value
of field current corresponding to the rated voltage on the air gap line is
360A. Choose the stator side base parameters as 3 phase power as power
base, rms line to neutral voltage as voltage base.
