Athina Top Sewing Instructions
Please read instructions thoroughly before cutting and sewing.

IMPORTANT: Before cutting out your fabric, you’ll need to prepare

your sleeve pattern piece which is marked out on the half within the
front pattern piece. To get full sleeve pattern piece, trace and cut
out the sleeve piece on tracing paper that has been folded in half,
lining up at fold edge of sleeve as marked on pattern piece.
Note: mark a notch at the centre of sleeve at top edge.

Step 1 - Stabilize necklines with Vilene shields: Cut out tear-away

Vilene shields for front and back necklines using the template
provided in the pattern.

On wrong side of fabric, pin shields to front and back necklines.

Sew shields close to the edge and inside the necklines’ ¼" seam
allowances. This secures the necklines and prevents them from
stretching.

1
Step 2 - Join shoulder/sleeve extension: With right sides together,
pin shoulder/sleeve extension seams. Sew ½" seam allowance.
Backstitch at beginning and end. Overlock seam allowances together
and press towards the back.

Step 3 - Attach sleeves: With right sides together, pin top edge of
sleeves to shoulder/sleeve extension, matching the centre of sleeve
to shoulder/sleeve extension seam.

2
Sew ½" seam allowance. Backstitch at beginning and end. Overlock
seam allowance together and press seam towards the sleeve.

Step 4 - Bind neckline: The Athina neckline binding method is

different to the neckline binding method on other Tessuti patterns.
Please follow instructions carefully.

The neckline binding is cut longer so you will need to check/measure

binding around the neckline before cutting off any excess. For this
bias binding method, it's recommended to stretch bias binding
slightly when measuring around neckline. Check/measure that your
neckline binding is the right length for your neckline, then join
ends together.

Pin right side of joined neckline bias to right side of neckline,

placing join of bias somewhere near one shoulder seam towards the
back neckline.

3
Taking ¼" seam allowance, sew bias binding around neckline.
Backstitch at beginning and end.

Tear away neck Vilene shields. Next, fold over binding to wrong
side, covering the ¼" seam allowance around neckline.

Pin in place on right side (close to neckline seam), making sure to

catch binding at the back. Note: The raw edge of binding is loose on
wrong side.

Understitch bias binding edge around neckline, catching the bias

binding at the back of neckline seam allowance. Backstitch at
beginning and end.

4
On wrong side of top, you will need to trim away the excess binding
approximately 1/8" away from stitching line.

Next, turn binding over towards the wrong side of top, making sure
that the binding is not visible on the right side. On wrong side of
top, sew binding in place sewing along outer edge of binding.
Backstitch at beginning and end.

5
Step 5 - Join side and under sleeve seam together: With right sides
together, pin back and front side/under sleeve seams, matching up
sleeve seam. Starting at the hem, sewing ½" seam allowance up to
notch point under the arm then taper in to take ¼" seam allowance
under the arm and finish at sleeve hem edge.

Backstitch at beginning and end. Overlock seams together and press

seam towards the back.

Step 6 - Hem top and sleeve: On right side of garment, stay stitch
all around hem ¼" up from hem edge on top and sleeves. Next, turn
hem ¼" at staystitching towards wrong side, then turn ¼" again and
edgestitch in place on wrong side. Backstitch at beginning and end.
Press.

You're done! Enjoy wearing your Athina Top.
