Arduino Based Alcohol Sense Engine Lock & GPS

Abstract:-

The aim of our research is to represent our project which makes human driving safer and to
overcome accidents. This project is developed by integrating alcohol sensor with Arduino board.
Arduino processor is able to handle more functions than conventional microcontrollers. The alcohol
sensor used in this project is MQ3 which to detect the alcohol content in human breath. Since sensor
has fine sensitivity range around 2 meters, it can suit to any vehicle and can easily be hidden from
the suspects. This project is fitted inside the vehicle. The project is designed for the safety of people
sitting inside the vehicle.

Introduction:-

Drunk driving is one of the major reasons behind road accidents worldwide. In all of the road
accident cases worldwide drivers have been observed to have excess alcohol content in their blood.
So we here design a smart alcohol detector system using Arduino coupled with GSM and GPS for
location transmission.
The system implemented by us aims at reducing the road accident in the near future due to drink
and drive. The progress in using the alcohol detector, a device that senses a change in the alcoholic
gas content of the surrounding air these device is more commonly referred to as a breath analysis, as
it analysis the alcohol content from person’s breath. The system detects the presence of alcohol in
the vehicle and immediately locks the engine of the vehicle.

Literature Survey:-

1. Design of Alcohol Detection System for Car Users through Iris Recognition Pattern
Using Wavelet Transform

Lea Angelica Navarro, Mark Anthony Diño, Exechiel Joson, Rommel Anacan, Roberto Dela Cruz
Electronics Engineering Department, Technological Institute of the Philippines- Manila Manila,
Philippines

Summary:

The purpose of this is to develop a system that captures the Iris image of the driver by detecting if
the person is drunk and likewise to develop a reliable algorithm for Iris Recognition. This is
composed of hardware and software system which focuses on the implementation of an algorithm
based on Gabor Filter. The system consists of CCD Camera and Analog-to-Digital Converter,
which is linked into a MATLAB program to simulate the captured image which then provides a
signal going to the microcontroller and a relay circuit to manipulate the car ignition. If the
MATLAB program detects that the driver is under the influence of alcohol, a bypass system follows
through a password which is recognized by the MATLAB program then the car/vehicle starts.
Positives:

1. Eye detection is more reliable as excess alcohol consumed might lead to blurry vision and
double vision which is detected.
2. It is also accurate as it’s mostly software based and are less prone to malfunctions.

Negatives:

1. Eye wrongly positioned may lead to wrong information.

2. Low light might produce noise.
3. Laptop is required as it needs a MATLAB compiler.

Thoughts Raised By Report:

For further improvement, the project recommends using a camera that can capture automatically
once the eye of the driver is sense by the device. The study also suggests using higher resolution
camera for more great images with less noise and no reflection. Since the device that being used for
MATLAB program is a laptop which is not applicable in the car, the study suggests using a touch
screen devices that is Microsoft base. The improvement regarding the system speed can also be
made. The system can be implemented in C or C++ for fast processing. In developing this system,
the speed is not one of the objectives, but for the real-time recognition, it would have to be
considered.

Summary:

A safe driving system of vehicle for drunk and driving cases, In this project we have used an
alcohol detecting sensor in vehicle which senses and detects alcohol gases and sends messages
continuously to their relatives within every 5 minutes. In this process arm7 microcontroller is
connected with GSM and GPS modules. GPS module gets the position of vehicle with longitude
and latitude then via GSM it sends the messages to the relative of the driver until he reaches home
safely. We have also used car accident prevention technology with ultrasonic sensor which also
sends messages via GSM to relatives of the driver while accident happens of vehicle.

Positives:

1. Small size
2. Low power consumption.
3. Compatible with most computer serial ports.

Thoughts Raised By Report:

Our system efficiently checks the accidents occurs or not and drunken driving. By implementing
this system in vehicle, a safe journey is possible which would decrease the injuries during accidents
and also reduce the accident rate due to drunken driving. This system has also accident prevention
technology which would reduce the accident of the vehicle in crowd areas. We can describe that
this is a safety features for vehicle because if alcohol detected or accident happens then it will stop
automatically. In case of alcohol detected or any accident happens it would send the messages to the
friends continuously about the location of the accident happened till the first aid reaches the rider.
Our system helps also to know the location of the vehicle for rescuing in the case of theft incidents.
5. Assessing the Feasibility of Vehicle-Based Sensors to Detect Alcohol Impairment

This publication is distributed by the U.S. Department of Transportation DOT HS 811 358
August 2010

Summary:

The most notable findings from this study include:

• The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS-1) and a low-workload scenario are sensitive
to alcohol. Alcohol effects were apparent in a simulation scenario representing a typical drive home
at night from an urban bar.
• These effects were evident in drivers’ control of vehicle lane position and speed. Standard
deviation of lane position and average speed differentiated BAC conditions most precisely.
• The most sensitive indicators of impairment are associated with continuous performance (e.g.,
lane keeping) rather than discrete events (e.g., response to a traffic signal or use of turn signals).
• The three algorithms detected impairment at and above the legal limit about as well as the
Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST), with sensitivity increasing with BAC level.

Objectives:

The long-term research objective is to use algorithms that detect impairment as feedback to drivers
to discourage or prevent drinking and driving. This report describes how, individually and in
combination, driver actions reveal signatures of alcohol impairment, and how well algorithms built
on these signatures detect drivers with BAC levels that are over the legal limit.
Specific objectives include:
• Understand how driving-related metrics reflect the impairment associated with BACs at 0.05%
and 0.10% (currently, the legal limit in the United States is 0.08%)
• Determine how well these metrics apply to different roadway situations and to different drivers
(i.e., determine robustness)
• Develop algorithms to detect alcohol-related impairment
• Compare robustness of metrics and algorithms

Thoughts Raised By Report:

This project demonstrated the feasibility of a behaviour-based approach to detecting alcohol

impairment. It also identified many issues that merit further investigation. Given the assumption
that moderate and heavy drinkers show less obvious indications of impaired driving, algorithms that
are able to detect impaired driving from this population are likely to be much more effective for
people who are light drinkers or for higher BAC levels, whereas the effectiveness of the algorithms
for problem drinker is unknown.
More generally, this study identified a huge design space of sensors, measures, signatures and
algorithms, algorithm parameter combinations, and Meta algorithms. Assuming there are at least 10
sensors, 10 metrics for each sensor, 4 time scales, 10 algorithms, 10 implementations of each
algorithm, and 4 Meta algorithms, a total of more than 160,000 potential algorithms exist. This
project sampled only a small region of that space. Steering wheel position is not subject to these
limits and further analysis of its ability to detect alcohol-impaired driving is warranted. More
generally, a promising direction for algorithm development is to identify classes of drivers and
classes of driving situations, and an important direction for algorithm assessment is to develop
metrics that relate to the interventions the algorithm intends to support
Working Of Proposed Model:-

The system allows for automatic sensing of alcohol in humans, we use a motor to demonstrate as a
vehicle. We further use a GPS module with GSM to send an SMS message to the concerned person
in case alcohol is detected and vehicle is stopped. The system consists of an Arduino Uno board
along with an Mq-3 alcohol sensor for detection and a GSM/GPS Module for notification.
In the case of a sober driver, i.e. the alcohol is under the permissible limits the car will run normally
which is indicated by the motor rotating, but in the case of a drunk driver, the alcohol content would
be higher than the permissible limit which is detected by the alcohol sensor and the Arduino
controller which stops the motor so that drunk driving can be avoided and also sends an SMS
notification to the authorities or family members along with the location of the car so that assistance
can be provided. The project also has an LCD for parameter display.
As shown in the above flowchart it’s clear that if there is no alcohol present the LCD does not
display anything and the buzzer is silent. If in case there is presence of alcohol then the LCD pops
up a warning message and sends a message of the person’s current location co-ordinates to the
registered mobile phones seeking help.
