Guided Questions
Directions: Answer these questions.

1. What is reciprocal?

2. What is difference between routine and non -routine word problem?

3. What are the steps in solving routine word problem?

4. What are the steps in solving non-routine word problem?

5. What is the good traits of Mohamad mentioned in the word problem in item
no.3 of Activity 1?

What’s New!

Directions: Read and analyze the presentation

1. Defining reciprocal of a whole number and fractions and showing that

multiplying fraction by its reciprocal always the product is equal to
1.

Reciprocal, or multiplicative inverse, is simply one of a pair of numbers

that, when multiplied together, equal 1.

Examples:

2/3 its reciprocal is 3/2

So, 2/3 x 3/2 = 6/6 or 1

2 1/3 = Change first into improper fraction so, it becomes

7/3 its reciprocal is 3/7
7/3 x 3/7 = 21/21 or 1

2. Difference between routine and non-routine word problem

Routine word problem - problem solving involves using at least one of

the four arithmetic operations and/or ratio to solve problems that are
practical in nature.
Example of routine word problem involving multiplication of fraction
without addition and subtraction.

Mohamed earned P 150.00 by selling newspaper. If he put 2/5 of his

money in the Money Box. How much did he save?

a. What is asked? Amount did Mohamad save.

b. What are the given fact? P 150.00, 2/5
c. What operation to be used? Multiplication
d. What is the number sentence? 150 x 2/5 = N
e. Answer: P 60.00

Example of routine word problem involving multiplication of fraction

with addition and subtraction.

Maria has 7 packages of peanut. Each pack contains 4/5 cups. She
needs 8 cups of peanut brittles. How many more cups does she need?

Number Sentence: 8 – (7 x 4/5) = N

8 – (28/5) = N

8 - 5 3/5 = 2 2/5

Non-Routine word problem- It requires some degree of creativity or

originality. Typically, it don’t have an immediately apparent strategy for
solving them. Often times, these problems can be solved in multiple
ways and with a variety of strategies.

Here is the examples:

If a certain number is added to ½ itself, and the result is 1. What is
the number?
Solution:
1/2 + N = 1
N=1–½
N = 2/2 – ½
N = 1/2

Directions: Give what is asked.

__________1. Give the reciprocal of 2 1/5.
__________2. Give the reciprocal of 3/8.
__________3. Precy answered ¾ of the test correctly If there is a total of 20-
items. How many items did she get correctly?
__________4. Mang Ali caught 50 kilograms of fish. He sold 4/5 of them to the
neighbors and brought the rest to the market, How many
kilograms of fish were sold in the market?
__________5. In Simone Elementary School there were 90 Grade 5 and 6 pupils
who participated in the Clean Up Drive Program. If 1/3 of them
are Grade 6. How many were Grade 5 pupils?

LET’S LEARN MORE

Directions: Read and analyze the word problem.

1
Mr. Lee had 45 eggs. He sold 3 of them on Saturday. How many eggs did
he sell on Sunday?

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. What are the given facts?
3. What operation to be used?
4. What is the number sentence?
5. What is your complete answer?
