Thumb rule 1

u Capital letter will not be used at the beginning of a kannaDa sentence or to


signify a noun, as there is no such practice in kannaDa (or in other Indian
languages)

Example – namaskaar.

Thumb rule 2

u Instead capital letter will be used to distinguish forms of similar sounds of


kannaDa when they have same English letter representing them.

Examples:
u bittu is read with a sound similar to ‘th’ as in path. whereas biTTu is read with a sound ‘T’ as in
biTTer.
u odu is read with a sound similar to ‘th’ as in then, whereas oDu is read with a sound ‘D’ as in
oDour.
u anna is read with a sound similar to ‘n’ as in gun, whereas aNNa is read with a sound ‘N’ as in
poNd.
u kaalu is read with a sound similar to ‘l’ as in call, whereas kaaLu is read with a sound ‘L’ as in
coLd.

Thumb rule 3

u English sentences usually are in subject-verb-object format, but when


translated into kannaDa (and other Indian languages) they change to subject-
object-verb format. Let us see how this is true in next slide.
‘I learn kannaDa’ is translated as
‘naanu kannaDa kaliteeni’

‘Monkey ate banana’ is translated as


‘koti banana tinnditu’
